Hi, I am trying to build a dual GPU server for machine learning experiments and 3D rendering. I have two Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 4090s that I got a good deal on, and I'm trying to find a motherboard that has the following qualities:
  • has a socket for a Threadripper PRO 7965X
  • can handle up to 2TB of R-DIMM DDR5 RAM
  • can fit two RTX 4090 GPUs
  • has adequate PCIe lanes for the GPUs and multiple M2 SSD drive
I am pretty sure that the ASUS Sage WRX90E-SAGE EEB motherboard is what I'm after, but I am concerned about whether the GPUs will both fit mounted horizontally in the PCIe slots. The motherboard has 7 PCIex16 slots but the cards have 4 slot width (so 8 slots total). Does that mean that I will need to use PCIe risers and attach one of the cards vertically? Will the bottom card hang out over the edge of the motherboard?

Also, another question I has is that if I later want to utilize the PCIe slots that are covered up by these massive GPUs, is it generally possible to fit risers with cables underneath them so that I can mount other hardware further away from the slots?

I am housing all of this in a Fractal Meshify 2XL case, by the way.

The meshify 2xl has 9 slots in the back of it. If you put the GPU cards in slot 1 and 5, the lower card's cooler would hang down past the motherboard but the bottom tray that covers the PSU is low enough that it wont interfere with the GPU.

If you need to add in another PCIe card you could put the GPU's in slots 1 and 6 witch would put your bottom card at the last slot on the case. You then could sneak in a 1 slot card between the GPU's

If you do put your card in slot 6, see how much room is between the cooler fans and the bottom tray, if there is enough room for air flow i would recommend that to allow the top card a 1 slot gap to get cool air.

Thanks! You're the first person that has been able to give me a solid answer on this. I know I would have found the answer eventually when I tried the build, but ideally I wanted to just know beforehand and save myself the effort of finding out the hard way that they won't fit.

It's good to know this is an option if I need it, but I did notice that the manual for the WRX90E says that slot 6 is the only x8 lane slot (all the other slots are x16).

Anyways, whether or not the cards would fit at all with this mobo/case was my biggest concern.

Now I'm just wondering if all these stories of weird firmware issues with the WRX90E are gonna come and bite me AFTER I'm done with my build (and past return window on my parts...)

I just couldn't resist... it was too perfect! 🤣🤣🤣
