Will eGPU set up bottleneck 1080 so much that I won't play with good fps in 1440p res?

I am aware that the whole eGPU thing will bottleneck the 1080 but I want to ask how much exacly?
Will I be able to game at 1440p with max graphics and get 60fps on newer games or will the bottleneck be so bad I won't get even 40fps?
Thanks in advance :)

Solution
If you are referring to External Gpu Docks, yes there is definitely some bottleneck. The performance will lower by 20-30%. However Gtx1080 is powerful enough to still run games at good 60 fps at 1440p. Sometimes you may have to lower some of your settings down, like using no AA or medium shadows etc. But still Gtx1080 will manage to get good performance even when most of the settings are in Ultra mode.

Edit: I further learned that External Gpu docks have serious bandwidth throttling issues. So anything above 1440p like 4k is a no no.

Solution
Thanks for the quick response!
I will use a PCIe to PCIe mini adapter though not a thunderbolt. And 1440p gaming is more than enough considering my 960m can barely do med graphics at 1080p.
