Will I have to change my motherboard If I upgrade my cpu?

My current cpu is a fx 6300 and its bottle necking my gtx 1060 6gb.I want to upgrade to a fx 8350 for now and then when I can get a job I will upgrade to a ddr4 platform.My motherboard has an am3 + socket.So will I be able to keep the same motherboard but just swap out my cpu?Thanks.

My friend has the exact same specs as me but he has an i7 7700 k

That's very far from same specs. i7-7700k costs ~ 5x more than your Fx-6300.

I meant like we both have gtx 1060 and 16gbs of ram

Memory makes little difference, but his CPU has a much higher IPC than yours and that helps.
