My PC Specs:

CPU: i7 - 980X
RAM: 16Gb
MoBo: Asus Rampage III Extreme
GPU: Asus GTX680
PSU: 1200 Watt

Is my 980x still good enough for 1440p gaming

Solution
I would say yes, single thread performance is a little low compared to recent CPUs, but the multi thread performance is still there. Really depends on the game.

Even though there will probably be a little bottlenecking you are still adding a lot of GPU performance to the system by upgrading. You should be able to max out the eye candy on pretty much anything at QHD.

its all depends on type of games u play.
MMO/Multiplayer FPS have higher cpu usage. Games such as Witcher 3, Rise TR, Fallout 4 (often singleplayer games) are more GPU demanding.
Not 100% precise, but its what ive seen from my own gaming experience.

I have a 660 with a 980x and running Star Citizen, the 980x hits 85% - 90% on all cores when the 660 caps out. I would say a 1080 is probably exactly what you need to run with a 980x depending on the software you are running. Different programs are optimized for different hardware differently.
