i want to upgrade my gpu to a msi gtx 970 but i dont know if it will fit

Shut down, unplug and open your computer case.
Take a tape measure and measure the distance from the back of the case, along the PCI-Ex16 slot, to either the front of the case or the drive bay (whichever you encounter first).

That will tell you how long of a card you can use. Since you have an available PCI-Ex16 slot, there's not compatibility issue.
