My old Predator died last week and there is no way for me to get the information I had on my hard drive off of that PC. Someone suggested taking the HD out of it and plugging into a hard drive slot that is like it.

I'm purchasing a new Acer Predator and was wondering could I plug it into there or would that not be a good idea? Just trying to get certain things off that HD without spending a lot of cash.

New Laptop:

Solution
M.2 then.

I would start with that Amazon adapter.

DC 3.3 volts.

Independent power is not a requirement per se barring lots of other USB devices being used or high power demanding USB devices such as a HDD.

Be very careful to look closely to ensure that the protocol and key match the SK Hynix HD.

For example - from the adapter link:

"【Applicable SSD 】- This M.2 SSD Enclosure only for NVMe PCIE SATA M-Key / B+M connectors M.2 SSD. Applicable to sizes 2242 / 2260 / 2280 solid state drivers. Does not support M.2 PCIe AHCI SSDs, M.2 PCIe devices such as WiFi and capture cards, mSATA SSDs, and non-M.2 form factor SSDs. Note: NVMe and SATA SSD are not included."

I would not install the old hard drive in the new Predator.

First ensure that the new Predator is working and do nothing that could violate any warranty protections.

Then remove the hard drive from the old Predator and install the removed hard drive in a standalone USB drive enclosure preferably having its' own independent power source.

That allows you the freedom to connect the old drive to other computer system(s) including the new Predator via USB in order to attempt recovering things as you wish.

Any suggestions on where to get something I could plug that old HD into? Looks like a piece of RAM, so I don't anything remotely viable to plug it into.

How is that old HD labeled?

Make, model, capacity, any specs printed on it? M.2, NVMe....?

Google "hard drive enclosures".

Or "USB SATA hard drive adapter cable".

Perhaps "USB SATA m.2 drive adapter cable"

Look for a matching connector on the HD end of the adapter cable.

= = = =

If necessary, take a couple of photographs showing the old HD and post the photographs here using imgur (www.imgur.com).

Here's what's on the HD

SK Hynix 256GB SSD SHB7820BB MSIP-REM-HNX

Found this on Amazon. Doesn't have it's own power but for what I'm trying to get off the old hard drive, I'm really not wanting to pay a big amount of money. Would that be suitable you think?
