Will my CPU bottleneck if I get a 6800GS?

I'm going to upgrade my graphics card, but I'm worried that my proccy will bottleneck it. My specs:

-AMD Athlon 2500+ XP (OC'ed to 3200+ speeds)
-Shuttle AN35N-Ultra mobo
-1GB (2x512MB) Corsair XMS TwinX RAM
-Inno3D nVidia FX5700LE

etc...

I was thinking of getting a 6800GS but I'm afraid my processor will bottleneck it. Should I just get a 6600GT, or is the bottlenecking so small that I should just get the GS?

Usually:

-UT2004
-Battlefield 2
-Battlefield Vietnam
-WoW
-Need for Speed Most Wanted
-CS 1.6 and Source
-Warcraft III
-Command and Conquer Generals

Maybe some other stuff in the future but for now that's usually what I play. I also do some light Photoshop (just like making forum banners) but nothing hardcore, no video encoding or anything.

...

Thats what I've been trying to say.

I asked if my CPU will bottleneck it so much that the difference between 6600GT and 6800GS would be very small.

if u're not interested in high 3dmark scores or high fps in games, ur cpu will work fine with 6800 gs. All ur games will run smoothly, without problems

there won`t be much difference between the two gs and gt i mean...on that sistem of yours ...so you better get the cheap one............
good luck.....

Your 5700 is bottlenecking you more than your 2500+ ever will.

The difference between a 2500+ and, say, an Athlon64 3500+ would be around 10 fps.

But a 6600GT should get you real nice double-digit increases, 15 to 40 fps based on the game and image quality.

You should see if there are AGP X800 GTO's in your price range, shouldn't be much more than a 6600 GT but they're quite a bit faster.

Thank you for the nice, clear answer and explanation. Exactly what I was looking for. And since my 2500+ is OC'ed quite a bit, so it should be pretty fast.

Should I get the X800GTO or 6800GS? I can find both for around $200-220 shipped, can't go any lower on either. I can get a 6600GT for around $150 shipped.

Hi There, i am facing a similair problem like MTLink, i just didnt wanted to post a new topic. here is goes:

my PC specs:

Amd Athlon 2600+, 2.03GHz
Abit NF7-S2(G) MB
1GB Kingston RAM
Ati Radeon 9550 256mb gfx (AGP)

the problem is that i want to update my GFX, but i cant decide between the 6800GS and the 7800GS (AGP). is my CPU good enough for the 7800 or would it be pointless and it wouldnt run on full potential??

also i cant decide whether i should buy a top range gfx or save up for a PCI-E system with a mid range GFX. Please help! Thanks

P.S anobydy knows some benchmark score differences between 6800 GS and 7800 GS AGP versions? help would be very appreciated.

I like my x800gto I got for $150 from newegg, refurbished. Scores over 5100 in 3dMark05 with my 3.8 ghz 540. The 7800gs is a good card, but a rip-off (thats nvida for ya.) Get the 6800gs, or a GTO. The AGP 6800gz can be unlocked to a 6800gt, but the AGP x800gto can't unlock pipes. Both OC very good.

Your CPU is good enough, but the 7800 GS isn't worth the money...

The 7800 GS is a 16-pipeline card for over $300 USD...

The 7800 GT is a 20-pipeline card that can be found for less than $300 USD, and has MUCH better performance. The only problem is that it's PCI-express only.

The performance of a 7800 GS is basically identical to the old X850 XT (which is rare in AGP but if you can find it can be much cheaper).

So if you're upgrading an AGP system, I don't recommend you spend more than it takes to buy an X800 GTO or 6800 GS. The 7800 GT is simply overpriced and the money might be better spent on a PCI express mobo/CPU upgrade.

Okay. Since I want my rig to last me until at least next year, I'll probably get a 6800GS. A 6600GT would be enough but probably not enough to run some big games coming later this year (UT2K7, Quake Wars, etc.) and a 7800GS, like Cleeve said, is not worth the money at this point. And besides, if I'm lucky, I can unlock the extra quad/shader on the 6800GS since the AGP version is based on the NV40.

OK MTLink ,I Think I Read your Post Too Late , Forget Abouut CPU If you are a Gamer , Graphic Card Say the Final Word , My Brother Have a Pentium 4 2400 ( stock w/o OC ) + 6800GS and Can Play FEAR Smoothy !!
as I ALWAYS say Forget About CPU , See The THG : The Mother of all CPU Charts , The Performance Difference Between a AMD 3000 and FX 57 in Doom3 (1024x768) is ONLY ~15 Frame !!
But If you Get a 6800GS you WILL Get +20~60 Frame in Games !!
And Good Choice For 6800GS , Go For eVGA or BFG , The Have Good OC Ability !!
Happy Gaming MTLink !!

Okay, so I went with the 6800GS. So far I'm very pleased with how games run. NFSMW, CSS, WoW, all on max with no stutters. BF2, however, runs on all max EXCEPT 3 settings (Dynamic Lighting, and two others) which run at medium. However, I'm aware that BF2 is a huge RAM-whore so I think I'll drop in another 1GB once I get some more money.

CPU bottleneck is only for games running on the extreme high end of the quality settings. In most cases, a good video card is easily the best way to go for gaming.

Honestly, when actualy playing a game, most people can't tell the different between the top settings and something a bit lower (Lower AA, simple shadows, filtering changes, etc) while actualy playing the game unless they are looking for it specificly. Playable is the biggest issue, and most games are playable with a setting or two turned down.
