It doesn't come pre-applied to the CPU, but the stock cooler has thermal paste pre-installed. What CPU cooler will you be using?

Not pre applied but it will come with some thermal paste that you have to put on. Its pretty easy to do and you can watch youtube videos explaining how to do it.

The CPU does not come with thermal paste other than what comes pre-applied to the stock HSF...

Yeah I know. But other coolers don't have thermal paste pre applied or at least all the ones I've seen.

I was pointing out the fact that your statement "it will come with some thermal paste that you have to put on" is not accurate. The CPU does not come with thermal paste which was the purpose of the thread.

No reason to spend ~$300 on a CPU that can overclock and then use the stock cooler.

The stock intel fan does come with pre-applied paste as mentioned, but it is woefully undersized for the CPU and especially undersized for overclocking. There are plenty of aftermarket CPU coolers in the $20-30 range that will be quieter and allow your CPU to stay at boost clocks longer. (Cooler Master TX3 is about $20) For mild overclocking there is the Hyper Evo 212 for ~$30-40, it is rather large)

Many aftermarket CPU coolers come with paste pre-applied or a small tube (or baggy) of paste to apply manually.

I've built a few pc's that used the Hyper EVO 212. Its a pretty good cooler for the price. I got to about 4.5ghz staying at around 85-90 degrees Celsius under full load.

I do plan on overclocking eventually.. but right now I'm over my build budget and I'm buying as much as I can, when I decide to overclock I'll definitely get one of those fans
