My computer is a Dell Optiplex 745 with a Pentium D CPU, 2.80 GHz and 3.24 GB RAM.

I want to install Windows 7 (currently, it has XP).

Can I use a 64 bit version of Windows 7?

Will this processor support VMWare? ... the goal is to run a virtual machine with XP so some old software will still work.

Thank you.

Will windows 7 Install? Yes and Confirmed. Windows 7 has all the needed drives on the disk besides things like Video Drives and any extra stuff.

Now since you have an Opti 745 I know it can take a nice 1066 FSB Core 2 Duo (UP to a E7500 that i know of. May take higher)

I have a Dimension 9150 that i just use for testing hardware and its a P-D 2.8 with 2GB or ram and windows 7 and its not all that great. Very slow. My Media Server which is use on a daily basis with its 1.8 GB dual core Celeron and 4Gb of ram is WAY faster than that, but the idea is that Yes you can install windows 7 and yes you can upgrade the CPU to something more usable.

Also what does the BIOS Say about Ram? 3.24 is just the max a 32 bit system can use. You...
Thanks for the info. Not what I wanted to hear, but so it goes. It is kind of a black eye for Intel and Dell. Windows 7 became available in 2009. This PC was built in 2007. Talk about planned obsolence!

I can confirm that Win7 Pro works find on a D830 (2M cache, 3.0Ghz, 800Mhz FSB) that I have at home. Haven't used it for a while, and am in another country now, but last time I used it (for web browsing) it worked fine. I think it only has 2GB RAM (but not sure, might have 3 or 4GB?)

Fairly sure you can run VMs on it, but it won't have hardware acceleration, as "Intel Virtualization Technology" was not a feature yet on those CPUs. A VM will be slowed down by the lack of hardware acceleration and amount of RAM that can be installed on the mobo, but should run nonetheless.
