My son has a Dell OptiPlex 790 DT which has a 250W power supply. He purchased a PNY GeForce GT 730 2GB DDR3 card to use with a new game that he purchased. The side shows a min of 300W. Will the 250W PS in his system work? I spoke with Dell and they said the biggest PSU for that system is 265W. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks

Solution
The 730 draws about 30W. The PCIe 16x supplies 75W. Dell power supplies are very conservatively rated, add about 50W to get aftermarket = rating. Dell sizes their PSUs to power all the bays and expansion slots provided. The low rating just indicates a computer with few drive bays, and expansion slots. The 730 1GB DDR5 is faster than the 2GB DDR3. GTX750Ti is 65W and is highly recommended. They come in low profile versions. Have at least 5GB RAM for a 2GB GPU.

Thanks for the response. Dell said the biggest PSU that the system would support is 265W. They said by going over that it could cause system damage or explode. It looks like it pulls the power from the MOBO since there's not any additional connectors that run to the PSU. We wanted to make sure that by trying it with 250W it wouldn't cause any issues.
