Will the 7770 or the 7850 work on my motherboard?

Hello,
My name is Sourav. I got this motherboard a couple of years ago:

I'm planning to buy the ATi Radeon HD 7850 in March, but I read that its BUS interface is PCIe 3.0 x16.

My current motherboard has PCIe 2.0 x16 bus.
My Power Supply: CoolerMaster SilentPro 500W

So my question is, will the HD 7850 run properly at on my motherboard?

I'm an average gamer, and recently I bought a AOC LED, and play games at 1920x1080.

Yes it will work. Just not at the full speed that a newer PCIe 3.0 slot motherboard would provide. Depending on what you have now, you could still upgrade to a higher 6000 series card. This chart should help. basically, you find your current card on the chart. Umm, you say that it won't run at full speed on the PCIe 2.0 slot, compared to the 3.0 slot. How much performance drop/ loss of GPU power am I expecting?

I've also added my PSU. Its a CoolerMaster 500W SilentPro model.

pci-e 2.0 has all the speed you need for that card since it doesn't have more than GB/s throughput

I think jimmy say the truth, since 7850 still can't maximize to utilize PCIe 2.0 x16, so it will be save to say you can use that card.

For the PSU you can look in your card how much power connector, that card needed..

If one i think 500 watt still enough but it is wise if you upgrade it to at least 550watt..
If need two auxiliary power then, it is need more that 600 watt (600-650)..

I say this because eveery card manufacture use difrent configurations when they sole it ^_^

your mobo will be ok with new tech cards such as hd 7xxx series or kepler which is going to release all pcie x16 is forward and backword compatible with each other so no need to worry about it.

here is the differences between these two pcie 2.0 vs 3.0 not a big difference.

no offence, but 7950 might not offer best performance for money for your current config. launch prices are always higher than they should be. since amd has no competition (for now) from nvidia, they are pricing the new cards quite high.
imo a radeon hd 6870 or geforce gtx 560ti would be more suitable for the athlon ii x3. both offer good performance for price. if it's for future-proofing, wait for a while and aim for a 7870 (latest rumor suggests march launch) when prices come down a bit. pcie 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with pcie 2.0 slots. so they'll work with your motherboard.
your psu... i don't know much about cm's silent pro series.... cm's lower watt psus seem hit or miss, mostly miss. google your psu's model number for a review article.

Actually I was looking to buy the 7850 and not the 7950. 😛
Launch prices are really high + the no competition thing for AMD resulted in this high price. Totally agree with you.
Waiting for the Kepler series to be launched. I'm sure that the prices will hit rock bottom by then. 😛
Also, one thing must be kept in mind that all modern games, especially the ones form the fat cat companies are always NVIDIA optimized. Don't you think so?

well your psu is enough for now i think it will be enough for those two hd 7770 and hd 7850 because the newer cards requires less power so it will be ok for that two but not higher bro so ever you think to buy psu in future get atleast of 750w or 800w psu of good quality brand and overclock your processer to avoid bottlenecking of gpu.

One other thing to consider is that Tom's and others have benchmarked the 7000 series cards and noticed poor performance in DX9. So if you still play any older DX9 games, or drop current games to DX9 for a better frame rate, you will likely be disappointed.

i hear conflicting rumors about kepler's launch. some say nvidia will launch in april.
nvidia maintains a close relationship with a lot of game developers (better compared to amd). even helps them out with game dev or lets them use nvidia codes etc. they also spend a lot of money in promotion and driver develeopment. but i don't think all high profile games are nvidia optimized. some high profile games definitely are e.g. batman arkham asylum, arkham city, starcraft, bf3 etc. games bearing t.w.i.m.t.b.p. marks have better support for nvidia cards. amd uses 'gaming evolved'.

I have a mint condition BF3 DVD lying around. I want a killer GPU first, and only then I'm gonna open it. 😀

Yea, Kepler is going to launched in April. And by then the prices of the ATi cards wil drop like crazy. I'll pinch one then.

If you have a stronger PSU then you don't have any problems running it since the 7850 has ~100w TDP
