Will the MSI 970A-G46 work with a AMD FX 8320 straight out of the box?

Yeah that will be perfect, be careful when swapping CPUs though. The standard zero insertion force, line up the gold arrows rules still apply obviously, but be sure to clean the CPU with rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth to get the old thermal paste off, if you are using his heatsink too then be sure to clean the base by the same method for the base of the heatsink then re apply the thermal paste to the CPU only, if you want to be sure you are doing it right there are plenty of online videos showing how to do it on YouTube so you can check it out there.
It worked right out of the box for me with a FX 6300 but they are both Vishera cores so it should be the same, if it doesn't you might ask around and see if you can find a friend with an AM3 or AM3+ compatible processor to use or just buy a cheap one for 35 dollars. AM3+ is backwards compatible with AM3 CPUs and will probably work right out of the box. If you have the AM3 CPU it will also be good for troubleshooting and a good backup if anything was to happen to your 8320. I have that one as a backup in case anything goes wrong. Okay thanks, I just ordered it. In case it doesn't work, my step-brother has an AMD Phenom II X4 955 will that be okay to update the BIOS?

Yeah, when i got H75 I used nail polish remover which worked great and a lint free kitchen cloth. I've never installed a CPU but I know how... if you know what I mean. Thanks for the help I'm really looking forward to this build :)
 


If you did order the 970A-g46, then you should read those before you open the package to try the MB, if you are luck you may useit with fx8320. If you check my forum signature I have that motherboard and was able to hit 5GHz (4.99973 GHz technically) with 1.456V VCORE long enough to install CPU-Z and validate on a 6300, I could have run stress tests but I was short on time.
 
That tdp is stock voltage and clocks. Overclocking will raise the actual tdp. And 1.46V passing through the VRM is still the same load on a dual core 25W TDP as it is on an 8 core 220W TDP. Also I will perform stress tests when I'm done with my work today, Il pull it back up to 5 GHz and run super pi probably and report back. And just so you know for it to count stability is important but that is secondary to validation, if you can boot into the OS and validate it that is still good. It didn't crash after validation, I just had to turn it off and get some work done elsewhere
 
It is on their supported CPU page for the board so I don't know where they got the information that it wasn't safe. If that is true I would like a link just to check out why. Also what is the source of the spreadsheet, that looks useful for recommending builds
 
That bit about not OCing was a bit off, it said you shouldn't run the 760 motherboard at full load. Doesn't seem to be the case with the 970 and the black socket should be good on the VRMs, there are some lemons within any batch the guy with the burnt out VRM might have just had the bad luck of getting a bad board. It is also the people who are angry who speak up the loudest. Not saying that it isn't good to be cautious, I would just be careful with the Vcore.
 


Hey I got the board yesterday and it works great, I used the OC genie and got 4.3Ghz staying at about 45 degrees celcius with my H75 and it scores about 9790 on passmark the only thing is though, I need to contact microsoft so they can reactivate my windows.
 

I ordered a bare bones kit from Tiger. FX-8350 on 970A-G46 motherboard. No POST. Bought a Phenom II 965 and tried that. Still no POST. Tried different (new) video cards and different (also new) DDR3 ram. Still no POST. Sent the board back RMA to MSI yesterday. Avoid the 970A-G46, it's garbage. Bought an ASUS M5A99X rev. 2.0 motherboard to use while I dance with MSI over the dead board (forget Tiger, once they have your money, you're invisible.)
