I built my wife a pretty strong gaming rig about 1.5 years ago.. However she's was stuck with her 970 GPU as GPUs were hard to get. I wanted to buy her a new GPU for XMAS finally and was thinking of the 3080 but wanted to know if I should hold out for a price drop with the release of 40XX GPUs? Thanks!

with the supply of RTX 4080 4090 still being somewhat limited and their prices still being very high i doubt you'd see much further of a price drop on the higher range RTX 3000 series for some time.

waiting for price reductions with computer components usually turns into an infinite game.
the longer you wait the more new products will be released and the more outdated the ones in question will become over that time.

i'd say a new RTX 3080 for ~$750-900 is worth the price while they're still considered some of the higher end options.

what CPU and PSU are you planning on pairing with this card?

It's Christmas. Prices will drop, simply due to competition between outlets. You can also get price reductions at some stores if they have a price match guarantee, but they retain the right to check only certain other competitors, Amazon being the most widely used.

Just don't forget that many have the same idea, a gpu for Xmas, as it's a major purchase, so not only shop around, but also check to see who has actual stock or availability. Waiting on a pre-order, just to lock in a $20 cheaper card may or may not actually get you the card by Xmas.
