I am shopping for a new CPU, I currently have a gtx 950 and I am wondering if having a ryzen 5 1400 will be alright for gaming for now. I plan on upgrading my card eventually, but not right now. I would appreciate any advice.

The 1400 would be just fine with a 950. I assume that you're running a 60 Hz panel? If so, then your bottleneck here definitely is the 950 more than anything else. Though I must ask, why not go for the 1600? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819113435 It's virtually the same price, but brings an extra 2 cores/4 threads to the table, making it a LOT stronger for streaming. Do you already have an AM4 board?

Solution
Although Ryzen 5 1400 is not the cpu with better fame for games, the reality is that it can be paired without difficulty, with average graphics such as GTX 1060 6G or RX 580. It can even be paired with GTX 1070 (without IT). On top of this it would be too weak.

With GTX 950 of course yes (the graph will be the weakest element of the couple).

I will also be buying an am4 board plus memory. Now that I look at it the 1600 that may be what I purchase, thanks for the suggestion!

If you haven't gotten the board already, I'd advise waiting a bit to see when AMD's B450 boards will come out (they're due at the end of this month apparently.) They're less expensive than the X470 boards, and would allow you to have better compatibility with AMD's latest processors. If you CAN hold out, I'd advise doing so, then going for a 2600 instead, as it is newer and performs even better. Up to you, though.
