Will upgrading OS fix unmountable boot volume (BSOD)?

Will upgrading fix the problem? I only have a 70gb hdd though.

not if there is a physical HDD problem. how old is the drive?

The BIOS still detects it, so yeah.

use a knoppix (or similar) cd to boot it. then you should be able to look at the hdd and see if there is anything salvageable.
