Hi all,
I have a 64bit computer running win10 pro 32bit (never upgraded). Now I have to make a 'clean' install of win 11 in order to upgrade - this much I understand (ablready downloaded the installer). Trouble is how do I keep my license if I am installing ex-novo? Then, what can I put back from any backups that I make - presumably NOT programs, only data. A number of free backup programs have instructions on how to use their apps to do this, but I am skeptical of their self- promotion. Can somebody point me to a trusted tutorial?
Thanks in advance,
TOny

Solution
If your windows is activated you can link it to an MS account and if you log into windows 11 with that same account then it will also be activated.
Your laptop could also have a license integrated in which case a clean installation will automatically be activated.
My advice take out your current windows drive and keep it for safety, install 11 on a new disk.
Otherwise take a full image of your disk as it is now so you can revert if anything goes wrong.
In your current state, backup any and/or all mission critical content and make sure you have the installers for your apps on a separate partition on your computer(desktop/laptop). I don't quite follow what you mean by ex-novo. FYI, 32bit app's will still be possible to install on an machine with a 64bit OS.

Install on another drive - yes, I thought of that and now that you mention it I think it is the way to go. I also found that, yes, I can link my license to my account, which I WILL absolutely do. Thanks to all.
BTW ex-novo is Latin for 'from new' (literally). It basically means to do a new installation. (sorry, I've been living in Italy too long).
