So i recently installed the 7RC on my main machine and just had a couple quick question. 8)


Since win7 puts everything from my old os into the old.windows folder, is it ok to run games and such from that folder or would it be more appropriate to install the game like normal?

In a normal rebuild, after the OS is done, i go to the manufacturers website and DL drivers like, onboard audio (if applicable) or chipset drivers, lan drivers, etc. However in this case, there are no drivers for the MoBo on the site. In fact, the only driver i did install is the one for the GPU (and in this case i had to run it in Vista compatibility mode).

Should i just not worry about other normal drivers? Everything works perfectly fine so ...

Last question i have at the moment.. the Windows Experience Index, how accurate is that of a tool on your systems performance? And what is the highest number, 10? 20?

You'll need to reinstall. You might find one or two things which might run from there, but I'd expect that'd be the exception rather than the rule.

There is a pretty good library of drivers (not perfect, tho) as part of Microsoft Update, and the OS comes with a solid collection of generic ones. check Device manager, and if there are no errors and everything is running well, then I'd call taht a "Win".

It's a guide, rather than a benchmark. The top number at the moment is 7.9.

The old folder is there for you to recover any files you failed to backup. Reinstall all your games and applications, retrieve any data files you need.
Once you are sure you have everything you need from that folder it can be deleted if you wish.
Windows 7 will have most drivers required, only look for drivers that are missing or not working. Usually the Vista drivers will work.
So if it ain't broke don't fix it.
The Windows Experience Index is guide, indicating things that may possibly be improved, I could care less about it while everything is working fine.
It seems everyone wants a higher rating then another.
The highest rating at the moment is 7, this will be updated as new hardware comes out.

Woot, thanks guys. Not only am i grateful for the answers, but the answers themselves i like. I had been running win7 on a spare machine, but haven't spent to much time with it. The more and more time i spend there the more and more i like the OS.

Yeah its really a pleasure to work with, it has some quirks but no OS on the planet is perfect at least until you tweak them.

I like all OS's but Windows 7 really is almost fun, if some one can describe an OS as fun.... I guess all that Vista tweaking I did when I ran it is paying off now. Some of the same tweaks work exactly the same.

I can only hope that it gets better as we get closer to the release date and more drivers come out for it.

Windows 7 is going to be a hit so you should see hardware manufacturer's jump on the bandwagon more then they did with Vista, also it's pretty close to Vista in the way it uses drivers so there should be less of a learning curve this time around too.
