Hi - I'm trying to keep my trusty ol' Dell D830 (which I use for playing music etc...) alive and running...

It basically works pretty well and a yr or so ago I added the POSready regedit and have been updating the notebook with the MS security updates...

Several days ago I tried running the MS updates but, hr after hr, the notebook just sits there saying "Checking for latest updates for your computer" !!??

Any one have any ideas why I'm no longer getting these MS updates??

Also (while I'm at it), from time to time the notebook slows down and in Task Mngr I see that "svchost.exe" is pinned at 99% CPU. If I click on it and kill that process task, it stops - and nothing bad happens ;-) - and Task Mngr goes back to showing ~99% System Idle Process...

Any ideas on what is causing this issue - and how to fix it ...?

Many thanks and rgds, G

P.S. For both these above problems I have tried stopping my AV (ie. Symantek EndPoint 12 and MalwareBytes...) - but that doesn't seem to help...

did you have the latest official updates before you applied the POSready update hack? Checking for updates does take a long time, but hour after hour, and nothing? There must be something wrong. SVChost.exe using the processor during updates is normal though. search around for possible solutions.
