win16 subsystem has insufficient resources

After I have had the computer on a bit, this error message comes up ....
'The win 16 subsysten has insufficient resources to continue running. Click
OK, close application and restart'
Then one of my programs, either perfect works or Print artist just closes
and I have to stop everything and restart the computer to get it back on. All
the other programs are still running and I can keep working for days with out
these programs, but when I want to use them I have to restart the computer
all over again. They will then work for a bit again and then it starts all
over again.
I have tried looking on the computer, but there seems to be no reference to
this win 16 subsystem in the computer at all. I have not done anything
recently to the computer, I have not loaded anything or altered anything
anywhere. The only things that have been going on to the computer are the
regular windows updates that come in every now and then.
Any suiggestions???

You answered your own question.

Reboot.

Whatever 16-bit application that you have running needs for your machine to
reboot.

I have had these programs on the computer since I had this XP, about 4 years
and its only been this last month that it has decided to do this. So it must
have been something to do with the windows updates that I have been having.
I will try this xp fix it program and see how that goes. It will take a few
days for me to see if it works or not. So I will let you know as soon as I
know.

It's all very well to say that its a program which is causing this problem but I have three computers running XP and one of them has done this ever since I loaded them all up together with the same stuff when I bought them and the other does'nt.

I suspect that my stoneage old office suite is a possible cause but why only on one computer.

As a precautio I've set the auto backup to operate often but it's not really the answer.

I guess it's just another case of IBM (I blame Microsoft)

In My case, This error appeared after an April 14th 2010 Windows security patch.
The error was caused by wow32.dll being the wrong version to support the 16 bit application. Un-install the last updates before the problem started. Save the wow32.dll in a safe place once you know things are back to normal.
Run the update, replace the wow32.dll in safe mode with the original. This can ony be copied in the "command prompt only" as Administrator. (the file is self healing otherwise) Problem should be solved.

I am getting this same error message! Did you uninstall all the recent updates that was installed at the time this started? Or was it one particular update that causes this error message?
