I am building a new system and need to decide on an operating system. I am mainly concerned with game performance under Win 2000. Will most existing games run ok? Will there be a performance hit?

I play lots of games on W2k, no problems (at least that aren't very easily solved). Most compatability problems have been fixed with SP2, or patches from MS or the software maker.
Chances are you probably won't even notice the remaining ones.

For compatibility, go to <A HREF="http://www.ntcompatible.com" target="_new">http://www.ntcompatible.com</A>.

As far as a performance hit, under d3d, yes. It's a driver issue, not the OS. So as drivers (read:nvidia) are updated, things usually get better. If you're playing a 2d game, then no; there will be a performance gain.
