win2k + refresh rate + baldurs gate

im playing baldurs gate right now.
problem is it looks ugy (liney) at this particular resolution (640x480) and refresh rate (75Hz)
i know my monitor can do up to 100hz or beyond, and i can set that refresh rate and others in windows display (and they look far better. for some reason 75Hz comes out very liney)
ie. 100 @ 640x480, 100 @ 800x600, 85 @ 1024x768

thing is when i run BG it goes back to 75hz, no matter what i try. something to do with 'default' refresh maybe.

win2k, sp2, detonator 4's (21.85) - they cured the classic win2k refresh rate problem... but how do i fix the default resolution in games

suggestions?

wasn't the classic problem that the refresh in games always defaulted to 60 and so the solution of using the refresh fix?

in the fix you just limited the refresh to 80 (or whatever you wanted).

so if the new det 4 fixed this issue...why do u still have the classic problem?

Win2k and games are a bit quirky when it comes to refresh rate. Here's what I did, which locks me at 100hz 1024x768.

1) Go under display properties, advanced, and set it manually locked at 100hz.
2) run dxsetup, override, 100hz.
3) use the baldur.ini file, change the refreshrate=60, to 100.

Sum gamez let you set the refresh rate manually, then completely ignore what you put. Others drop down to 60hz for the movies. So, I figure screwem all, and lock them out of the decision.

Get their attention with a 2x4 to the head; that's what the judge said...

well i DID have the classic problem before the detonator 4's arrived.

i was stuck at the hideous refreshrates of 60,70 and 72, with games defaulting back to 60hz!
fontunately that was fixed with detonators4.
can now do up to 120hz, but still defaulting bck to 75.

i knew it was somewhere.
set my dxsetup from default to 85Hz
much nicer than 75.
while not as good as 100, 85 is the best my monitor can do reliably at 1024x768, so it becomes a good standard as 85hz happens to look good in all other resolutions too.

that sounds like the same problem except that its 75 instead of 60 now

yep
need a small file for your winnt/system32 directory called directx.cpl (dxapplet.zip)
then u have more directx control via a new icon in your control pannel.
very useful
