Win2K strange death

After installing Win2K on A7V for 3 days or so it will die, never be able to restart, repair of whatever feature ms provide failed. However if you have a dual boot system, you can copy the entire folder :-

c:\winnt\system32\config

as a backup somewhere else, and when Win2K decides to die, recopy the folder and Win2K will live again.

Any one knows why? I hate not knowing the real reason and have to restort to such unknowledgable fixes.
