Win2k USB... Going Crazy

I got a serious problem with my USB plug.

Firt, if I don't manualy disable my ZIO smartcard USB reader before unpluging it, I get a message telling me I should always disable the device before unpluging it. I did not have that message on my previous computer. Only since I use the KT7A Raid.

Second, even if I do manually disable the device before unpluging the next time I plug it, I get an error message saying that I did not disable the device last time I used it. And I can't use it any more.

I tryed everything to be able to use the USB device again, uninstalling the USB stuf in Safe Mode... nothing worked. The only way I found was to format my HDD again. And I did it twice, and again and again, I can use my USB device only once.

What is wrong? I am going crazy over that stuff!

Haha.

PS. I am using Win2K and I did unstall the software package 2n which is suposed to fix some USB problems.

Have you installed the latest drivers for the card?

It might help if you disable USB error detection. You can do that in the Device Manager, under Properties for the Universal Host Controllers.

I had a similar problem with an USB ADSL modem until I found a decent driver and disabled the error detection.

You might also need to update your chipset drivers since installing Service Pack 2.

The system chipset and controllers are the logic circuits that are the intelligence of the motherboard. These often function better with updated drivers, just like any other device.

If you look at this FAQ page, you'll get a better idea of what the chipset drivers can do for your system.

<A HREF="http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=3&faq=7&Search=" target="_new">http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=3&faq=7&Search=</A>

You'll see that VIA recommends that all chipset users should install the 4-in-1 drivers to improve performance, fix issues, and minimize any incompatibilities.

This page will tell you exactly what the drivers are:

<A HREF="http://downloads.viaarena.com/installguides/DriverInstallationGuide.htm" target="_new">http://downloads.viaarena.com/installguides/DriverInstallationGuide.htm</A>

I hope this helps answer your questions.

OK. It looks like I have this problem only with the front USB plugs. If I use the back plugs, there is no problem. Right now, the front USB are not usable any more, and I did disable USB error detection. What could be wrong?

Haha.

Is the original error gone with the SmartCard Reader (if you only use the USB ports in rear of the can) since you disabled the error detection? Are all the Universal Host Controllers listed in the Device Manager?

Maybe you should tell me a little more about your system, if you don't mind.

If this is an OEM machine, perhaps you should contact the manufacturer, and see if they have a workaround.

Thanx for all the comments. I tried everything without any succes. I must add something:

My two USB at the back of the computer ARE WORKING FINE everytime, I never got any error message.

So why is my front USB's work only one time, on a fresh installed OS (Win2K) ????

One more thing, I tried the ABIT USB expansion cable, and it does not make any difference, so the case is not at fault.

Haha

The ONLY thing I have not tried (besides getting a new board!) is enabling an IRQ for USB in the BIOS.

How do I do that, I mean, how do I select a free IRQ?

Haha
