Win2k vs. 98SE

Hi,
I just got a new system Athlon 1.2 with Asus a7m266 MB.
512k DDram. Have win 98 SE installed. System has 3 18 gig HDs. Should I be putting Win 2000 on the D drive and use a dual boot? System is mostly for gaming and for Photoshop.
I've NO experience with Win 2k and wonder how much performance increase I'd see, if any. I've heard win 2k is very stable.

As far a's boot goes, you can dual boot, you can boot from different drives, that is up to you and what is the most convinient for you. I am booting from IDE into ME or from SCSI to XP (setting in the bios which drive to boot from)
So it is all up to you... 😎

Yeah, just try it out and see how you like it. You might prefer to use Photoshop in Win2K instead of 98.

It's faster on disk access, but the drivers for games aren't perfect. You'll see a fps drop on most games, unless you are using software rendering. The frame drop is dependent on the type of card you have, and the drivers you use. If you've never used NT before, you'll have to learn a few new things.

Are there any tricks to getting good drive performance in win2000? I set my new system up as dual boot, and I get much better drive "scores" in win98 than in win2000, and it seems to be true as the tests just take longer to perform. For example, I get 23400 in win98se and only 9100 in win2000 with my 45m IBM DTLA on my Iwill KK266 (KT133a) board.

Any advise?

I'd vote for Win2K as far as Photoshop is concerned. I monkeyed with '98 quite a bit to put a stop to some of the Photoshop lockups I was having. It's run without a hitch under Win2K.
Overall stability seems better with Win2K and the three fingered salute (control-alt-delete) works a whole lot better when one of your applications get uppity.

Regarding your drive scores, is that drive ATA-100?? If so, you'll need to download the hotfix from M$ for Windows 2000, otherwise it runs in PIO mode (very slow)
