Win7 does not recognize flash drive

My Asus Win7 64bit box will not recognize standard USB 2.0 flash drives. Have tried two different brands on several different ports. I have seen several fairly complex "solutions" offered on different forums, but surely this must have a simple solution. Any thoughts?

Does your Asus PC recognize anything attached via USB?

Yes; all other USB devices I have tried (external HD, webcam, headphones, keyboar, mouse).

Try plugging the drive in and then go to Disk Management under Storage in the Control Panel. Is your drive shown there? If YES then you need to assign the drive a drive letter.

I can find the device, correctly identified, in the device manager, but don't see a way to assign a drive letter. There is no "storage/disk management" in my control panel. It is located under "drives", not USB devices.

Wait, if it is listed under device manager with a drive letter then it IS being recognized. This might sound remedial, but did you try looking for it under "My Computer" to check if it just isn't auto-playing?
