Hello all.
This is now my second fresh install of Windows 7 since encountering this issue with my NEW PC build. I have had recurring PC hangs on desktop [no mouse movement, icon of mouse changing to 'text selection' icon or with no desktop response when it does move]. At first I thought it was my DVD drive as it kept appearing and disappearing [???] in BIOS/My Computer. I checked all SATA connections. All PSU connections. I then gave up on DVD drive and disconnected it completely. This issue is still occurring. I am including below as MUCH info as possible including Event Logs of times when I know crash occurs. I suspect it may even be something to do with nVidia driver... but no idea.
I know this is something that could be caused by almost anything and I am pulling my hair out looking for a needle in a haystack! Please help!
In order to maximize my chances of getting a solution I have included below my FULL OS/Hardware/Software specs and a HijackThis report.

Thanks in advance!

***UPDATE*** Really think it is the nVidia drivers... as I just had a freeze as I was publishing this... and it told me the Kernal had stopped working... mouse froze and screen went black. Dunno if it's an issue I can fix and stay on drivers or what... so confused. Why would that have affected my DVD drive in the way that it did?

Solution
I'm no expert on computers, just an amateur. Take this with a grain of salt.

But many of my hairs got pulled out over this too! My 4770k would be running fine on the Z87 Sabertooth with a GTX 760 when "Hey! What the hell is up with my mouse!"

It switches to the text symbol, everything goes in slow mo, and the computer stalls and hangs. If I left it long enough, it would often recover from this. I thought it was either my DRAM or a corrupt windows install.

Also thought it was the cursor icon itself for awhile. Tried turning off mouse pointer shadows. I thought it was the cursor because I would set mine to Aero (large) but when it acted up it changed to Aero (default) or Aero (small?).

I set the memory timings in the BIOS to...
You could try your onboard video that should be with your 4770k. I would also suggest that you remove the card from slot when you do so. I think you should try to that and if it doesn't work, try to update to most recent SSD driver as I don't know how these dumb hybrid drives work.

Thanks Haynes. I have updated the firmware of the SSD on my last install of windows but upon having these issues the first time I formatted the system. I have checked my drivers but a fair point! I am trying my best to avoid using onboard graphics when I was wanting to use the 560Ti... I may give that a go though and see if these crashes still occur. I dunno, I am reading on a site here about a similar issue [I am thinking the DVD issue may be separate and a faulty drive]. The display crashes on desktop are odd and think may be this: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/548402/official-nvidia-320-49-beta-display-driver-feedback-thread-released-6-25-13-/?offset=654

I dunno how to fix it though. Trying to figure out how to roll back my nvidia drivers... and to what? As it's a fresh install do not have the option... but even if I find a download somewhere I want to make sure I'm not rolling too far back. Even as I type this the desktop is freezing up at times... it is not the board/CPU as numlock/caps lock is able to be turned on/off. If the board/CPU was to fully freeze then that would not respond.

I really think it is the 320.49 drivers but no idea what I should rollback to!

This problem also drove me crazy, but I believe I have fixed it and it was much easier than I thought. I have installed on this machine BOINC and was running SETI and Rosetta and they were constantly using the video card. I edited the settings to no longer use the graphic processor and the problem went away. I have no idea if this means this is a problem with BOINC, NVIDIA;s drivers, or the actual graphic card. I'm just glad that whatever it was has stopped. Your mileage may vary and good luck.

I set the memory timings in the BIOS to accurately reflect the specificiations of the RAM sticks and I also reinstalled windows.

I also switched from 16 gigs of RAM on four sticks to 8 gigs on two sticks, thinking it would make the system more stable (and 8 gigs is plenty for me).

After, I did not suffer the hangups upon boot nor the mouse-pointer-turning-into-text-input-icon-while-everything-moves-like-under-a-strobe-light syndrome.
I was never able to pin it down to anything specific. But this processor/mobo/graphics card combo have been acting kooky ever since I got em, and it still continues to do so. I don't know which one of them is the culprit. One problem disappears only to be replaced by a new stranger problem. I keep getting general weirdness for which I cannot find a cause, and every piece of hardware I have passes all the tests I throw it with flying colors. And it happens so randomly, I can't detect any sort of pattern to it. Everything I think of ends up being just conformation bias, where I've decided that x is the problem beforehand so I keep seeing symptom z next to x, even though they aren't actually related.

But I've just decided to deal with it. Some people get alcoholics for fathers and some people get willy-wonka pc parts, such is life.

Upgrading (flashing I believe it's called?) the BIOS to latest version didn't work for my Sabertooth by the way, but I'm not sure if your motherboard is the same way or not.

I would just reinstall windows and take very sharp care over how and when I install my drivers. Do them one at a time and slowly. I have no idea if it will help you; like I said, I was never able to isolate the problem. One odd piece of advice might also be to overclock it and up the voltage a bit (be reasonable here..). Weird I know but my system seems a whole more stable after I did so. I wonder if it was getting enough power.

Well, good luck.

Solution
I am having similar issues. I have ASRock Z87 Extreme4. From what I can tell, the USB subsystem seems to be locked up. If you have a USB keyboard or mouse, and they don't respond, that makes a lot of sense. I am currently leaning toward the Intel USB drivers. I went through a lot of USB diagnostics, and I am seeing USB errors in a trace concerning the PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C2D device (which is the C220 Series USB EHCI #2 hub). But nothing is plugged into the regular USB ports. The Advanced USB Port Monitor tool can't even list the USB devices and ports when you get in this state. And trying to shutdown causes a LOT of problem (startup recovery is often kicking in). I used to have my mouse plugged into a USB2 port. I am going to try running with everything plugged into the USB3 ports and see if that makes the difference. If not, then my next step is to disable that specific USB device in Device Manager.

When the problems happens to me, all the USB ports lock up at boot.

HERE IS SOLUTION.

Intel - Smart Connect Technology is CAUSING USB DEVICES
My razer mouse and keyboard FREEZES WHEN SYSTEM IS LOADING UP it seem to be fine after 30 seconds from full boot. It was annoying so I have uninstalled it. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
