I recently upgraded my HP Probook 4540s i5 2.60ghz laptop from Win 7 to Win 10 64-bit and its been working fine. To increase performance, I'm trying to upgrade the RAM from 8gb (2x4gb) to 16gb (2x8gb) which is the max capacity for this laptop according to HP. The RAM I purchased, 8GB 1600MHz PC3-12800 (Kingston) is listed in the specs on the HP site. The BIOS shows 16gb of RAM is registered. I've run all the BIOS system tests and they all passed and the BIOS version is current. I've followed all the HP troubleshooting steps to perform a hard boot, etc.

Win 10 starts to boot, gets to the first Windows logo and churns for an hour before getting to the start screen. Log in, another 45 min before the desktop starts to load and then after waiting another 40 minutes or so it never loaded completely I tried to see how much RAM windows was registering but I couldn't navigate to the properties. No error codes ever display.

I have tested both 8gb sticks in both slots on the motherboard and the system boots up fine if I only use one of them. Anything over 8gb doesn't load.

I reverted back to the 8gb and poked around Windows but can't find anything that would help fix this.

Help!

Solution
I have the very same issue with a ProBook 4540s. I recall when I bought the computer, I read that the max memory was 16gb and that it came with 8Gb in 2-4Gb sticks. The Crucial scanner tells me that the laptop can handle 16Gb. No answers at this point but I'm still trying to find a solution. CPU-Z finds both original (Micron) and Crucial Memory to be the same speed. I can boot with one 8Gb stick in either slot without issue.
According to this your laptop can only support 8GB of RAM:http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=5229455&docId=emr_na-c03758231&docLocale=en_US Also it says 4GB per slot maximum, so I wonder how much RAM it says you have installed in your system when you can get it to boot with 1X8GB.

Hmmm . I guess I got some bad information. I can't find the page where it said max capacity was 16gb. But I visited many sites when researching what to buy. What's really odd is that Kingston and Crucial both sell a 16gb kit (2x8gb) which they say is compatible with the ProBook 4540s. Arrrgh

Anyway, both the BIOS and Windows indicate 8gb registered when using one 8gb memory stick (and one empty slot). And when I have both the sticks in, the BIOS registers them both and the memory tests all pass.

I gave up and returned the memory. If you do find a solution, please post it here. Thanks!

I have had the same issue, the trick below fixed it.

Effectively boot it with a single 8gb stick so you can at least get into windows, then use bcdedit or similar to reduce the maximum memory available. Then put the other 8gb stick in and boot it back up.

msconfig -> boot -> select your entry -> click advanced options -> tick maximum memory -> set this value to 256mb less than your total (16128 for 16GB for example)
