I have a laptop running Windows 10 Home, originally it came with Windows 8.1. A year and half ago, after installing W10 , i created a disk repair for this laptop using a dvd.

Do i need to create a recovery drive with a usb thumb drive also?. Is it different performing recovery with a usb flash drive? . Thank you.

Solution
From below, it states that the win 8 one should be non functional:
Every time when you upgrade Windows to the next version, the upgrade program will create a recovery partition if it detects that there is no sufficient space on your recovery partition (GPT disk) or system reserved partition (MBR disk). There is no wonder that you have many recovery partitions after upgrading to Windows 10. If you don’t want Windows to create another recovery partition, you can increase the size of recovery partition or system reserved partition before upgrading to Windows 10.

According to Microsoft, the previous Windows version recovery partition will be nonfunctional, so you can delete the previous recovery partition to free up some disk space.
...
Because there is a new version of win 10 released every 6 months, I would be making one more than every year, as it may contain the wrong version info otherwise.

From what I can tell, the recovery drive includes the features of a repair disk: https://www.howtogeek.com/131907/how-to-create-and-use-a-recovery-drive-or-system-repair-disc-in-windows-8/

I don't actually use recovery drives or repair disks, i just make a copy of the installer every time a new one is released and use it. I can see its handy for repairing PC and moving the recovery partition to a USB,

Thank you Colif. I was wondering if the recovery partition for this laptop is one with Windows 8.1 and if creating a recovery drive with a 16gb usb drive will make any difference now.
Also, can i create a recovery drive with a usb flash drive and save its contents in an external Hdd, in case i need two recovery drives, and dont want to use a thumb drive exclusively for this task.

recovery drive. Can you show me a screen shot of disk management? It might show me how big the partition is and that might tell me if its 8 or 10. Upload it to imgur and show link here.

external drive: If its like the Installer, I would guess the only things you can boot off are USB or DVD. I know you can't install win 10 from an external hdd unless you had the enterprise version.

Disk management :

Disk 0 Partition 1 100 mb Dispon. 100%
Disk 0 Partition 2 900 mb Dispon. 100%
Disk 0 Partition 6 20.01 Gb Dispon. 100%

Data (D) 537.80 Gb NTFS Dispon. 29%
Os ( C) 372.60 GB NTFS Dispon. 79%

So if you make a recovery drive in Win 10 it will only use the win 10 partition.
