I'd like to control/stream my desktop from my laptop using the Remote Desktop function on Windows 10, however I can't manage getting it to work...

I've tried the following:
- Use different info when connecting, such as trying computer name instead of IP, etc
- Setup a static IP on the laptop
- Checking the firewall so it's not blocking on neither the laptop, nor the desktop
- Making sure both computers are in Workgroup
- Setting up so both computers view the network as Private

None of these helped.
opwever, there is another thing I'd like to try - reseting the router... though that's not possible right now, as my brother told me a friend of ours had gone in and changed some settings on it to fix a thing, and those settings may get lost if I reset the router. I could ask him about it, buuut he's on vacation.
So, are there any other things I can try out before attempting to reset the router or doing other things that may ruin his settings?

Solution
if you are trying to connect to the desktop from outside the network you will have to port forward port 3389 TCP to the desktop's IP address.
connect to the public IP address of your router.

if you are trying to connect from inside, make sure you can ping the host name or ip address of the desktop from the laptop.

in both cases you will have to enable remote desktop on the desktop by going to control panel -> system ->remote settings -> allow connection to this computer under remote desktop section
