Thanks for reading in advance, so i shut my computer down to go have some food, and when i came back and started it up it booted into windows 8 and had been wiped clean,
and ideas what happened and how to restore it if possible as i had just been doing some very important work and hadn't backed it up yet.
I upgraded to windows 10 on release and it has been working fine without incident untill now.

Sounds like your machine was reset to factory defaults.. presumably from a factory set hidden partition (what brand your PC?) and I presume it came with Win 8.
I cannot imagine how that could have happened by accident, without any prompt/warnings.
If I am right, and it really a factory reset.. you will have lost all your data. You may be able to get some back with a recovery tool.. or via a professional service.. but the prognosis is not good for getting your data back.
Did it really go bac to a totally clean Win 8 install? it didn't just roll back the Win 10 update (in which case your docs/data should not have been lost)
Sorry I cant be more helpful 🙁 Hopefully someone else will have a better insight.
Cheers
