Hi, I'm trying to connect my 2TB external hard drive to my router via its USB port so I can access it over my network 24/7. To do this I'm using SAMBA and my router is detecting the drive no problems and also DMS works so I know there's no issue with the drive, however none of my devices can see the drive in the network section of file explorer. I tried looking online and from what I can understand Windows 10 removed support for SAMBA by default but there's a way to enable/get it back, please could someone explain how I would do this?

Thanks.

....the instructions on how to enable smbv1 are too complicated for me to follow, can you explain how to do it so I can see if this resolves the issue?
Those instructions are as simple as it gets. You may want to either turn it over to someone more experienced, or, setup another Windows machine and enable a share.

Hi, thanks for the response. If I'm understanding the article correct, it gives instructions on how to access a SAMBA share hosted on a Linux machine. However I'm connecting my drive to my routers USB port, is this till applicable given that I know most machines (even routers?) use Linux?

I tried this anyway and I just get an "the folder you have entered does not appear to be valid" error. My router address is 192.168.1.1 and the Hard drives name seems to be Western_Digital-10584A4C_usb1_1 so I tried using \\192.168.1.1\Western_Digital-10584A4C_usb1_1 I think that would be correct.

Hi, it's a huawei HG633. I did create a user account for the share but was never prompted to use them, as you said the error came before I got the chance to enter any of that info.

Hi, I've also seen the manual and they only use usb1 as an example, I tired it anyway and there's no luck. Is it not so that microsoft removed the function from windows 10 as suggested here? http://

It seems a user identified the router as using smbv1 link hence why it doesn't appear, the instructions on how to enable smbv1 are too complicated for me to follow, can you explain how to do it so I can see if this resolves the issue?

On the other hand if you think I would be best avoiding it for the same security reasons as microsoft removed it I could use an old notebook and connect the hard drive to this and just use a network share as an alternative, would that be best?

Thanks.

I think to avoid any security risks I will set up a windows file share, or maybe even install a dedicated NAS OS on the old laptop and go down that path instead.

Thanks for your help, hopefully my ISP moves beyond a 30 year old protocol next time they release a router.
