To preface;
Had Windows 8 on an HDD, bought a fancy new SSD, used the SSD's partition wizard (Samsung) to copy/move my OS and all files to the SSD. OS is now on the SSD. Fast forward a few months, Windows 10 is released. Upgrade windows 8 to 10, was running into issues then "couldn't apply updates due to reserved partition". I believe I made my SSD the active partition and was able to update to 10 from there on. Had windows 10 on my current SSD, but it wasn't receiving regular updates. Did some googling, found that I needed to make my SSD the active partition. Go into disk management, mark the SSD as active, being able to update the current version of windows. Great problem solved. During the update, the Windows update thought I was upgrading to Windows 10. It didn't recognize that I was already running 10 and started the update as if it was coming from 8. It continued with the upgrade. The PC restarted a few times and now I cannot boot into windows without using some form of a recovery drive/disk. I have used both a USB recovery drive from windows 10, tried refreshing, system restore, to no avail. ill post the results from each of the following advanced options recovery tools.
Using Windows 8 disk as my recovery media:
• Refresh your PC: " drive where installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."
• System Restore: "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows to restore." Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore"
• Startup Repair: "Start up repair couldn't repair your PC Press "Advanced options" to try other options to repair your PC or "Shut down" to turn off your PC"
• Command Prompt: I tried this with the Windows 8 disk as my repair drive, and with a Windows 10 repair drive and yielded the same results
o bootrec /fixmbr
the operation completed successfully
o bootrec /fixboot
the operation completed successfully
o bootrec /rebuildbcd
successfully scanned, total Windows installations 1, add installation to boot list? Yes
the requested system device cannot be found
o sfc /scannow
there is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. restart windows and run sfc again.
