Brother updated windows 10 on a samsung laptop (model: NP510RSE). Would not boot, automatic repair would come up then the screen just goes black after some time. Not able to get into the BIOS(not sure which key, but tried multiple times with esc, del, and various other F keys).

Removed HDD and reconnected, nothing.
Tried force restarting to get into recovery, nothing.

Finally hooked the HDD into my desktop, using the same sata cables another working HDD was using.

First time booting from the desktop ssd logged into windows to black screens. Had to force restart, upon booting windows ran an automatic check and repair which got to 22% then went to login, multiple times.

Checking task manager shows that the laptop HDD is pegged at 100%, chkdsk isnt working, any attempt to use the file explorer fails and windows explorer restarts, disk manager doesnt respond.

There are pictures and other files without backups so I have not tried formatting the drive, if anyone has another option before that it would be a huge help.

Solution
HDD most likely failing. Depending on the brand, you can download the vendors diagnostic utility and run a test. If it's reported that there's a SMART warning, that right there is a give-way that the drive is on the cusp of failing.

If it's Western Digital, look for Life Guard Diagnostics. https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=3

If it's Seagate, look for SeaTools. https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/seatools-win-master/
