Hello there! Thanks for checking out my post.

I really need some help because my work Surface laptop will not boot to Windows after restarting it to apply the latest Windows 11 update. I get a blue screen varying between the two following errors:

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I have tried the following:

Auto-repair: Failed

Safe boot: Failed (blue screen)

Uninstalled latest quality update: Installation completed, but did not help.

Tried to uninstall latest feature update: Failed to uninstall

Restore computer: worked, but didn’t help. The earliest point I could choose was just two hours before it stoped working.

Reset computer (keeping personal files): failed. Can not download.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

All the best, Jonas

Side notes: Right before restarting the computer i failed to print a document, and the pdf reader software (Adobe Acrobat) frooze.

on another PC, download the Win 11 ISO and create an installer either using Media creation tool (2nd link) or ISO (3rd link) - https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

anything on C you want to save?
boot from the installer
  • on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
  • choose troubleshoot
  • choose advanced
  • choose command prompt
  • type notepad and press enter
  • in notepad, select file>open
  • Use file explorer to copy any files you need to save to USB or another hdd
if you copy everything off Drive C is on, I would clean install and see if that fixes it.

the steps are mostly the same - follow this guide: https://forums.tomshardware.com/faq/how-to-do-a-clean-installation-of-windows-10.3170366/
