I’m not sure this is in the correct forum, so please move it if necessary.

I have an HP laptop running Windows 11.

It has two USB-A ports and one USB-C port.

Earlier today, I started getting messages every few seconds saying:

“USB device not recognized The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. Recommendation: Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not eecognize it, your device may not be working properly.”

I have an external Seagate drive plugged into one of the USB- A ports, and headphones plugged into the other USB-A port.

At first, I could still see and use the drive, and the headphones worked.

Now, the external Seagate drive isn’t recognized at all.

When I unplug the drive or the headphones, the laptop makes the usual “device removed” sound.

When I look in the Device Manager, there are either or two Unknown USB Devices, which are both listed as Universal Serial Bus controllers.

I’ve tried uninstalling them and rebooting my computer, to see if that forces a reinstall with working drivers, and I’ve gone back to a restore point from a day ago, before this problem starting happening,, but nothing has stopped those error messages from popping uo.

When I unplug both the external Seagate drive and the headphones, those unknown USB devices disappear from Device Manager.

Since it seems unlikely that both USB-A ports, which are on opposite sides of my laptop, would both fail at the same time, I am assuming it’s a software/driver issue.

I’ve also plugged my external Seagate drive into a Windows 7 desktop and it seems to be working fine there, so I hope that mean the drive is not corrupted or broken.

And when I plugged my Android phone into the USB-C port, the phone is charging, I’m not getting any error messages, and there are no unknown USB devices listed in the Device Manager. However, when I try to enable data transfer, the error does occur, so it seems as though it's a problem with all three USB ports.

I’ve also tried updating the drivers for the ones that appear to be causing problems, but it says they’re the latest ones.

So, does anybody know whether I can recover from this situation, and if so how? (I’ve more or less used all of my Windows 11 knowledge here, so I’ll need step-by-step instructions, please.)

Thanks!
