Hello Tom's Hardware people!

So I am upgrading my motherboard, but I heard that if I do that my Operating System (win 7) will erase and I will have to do a reinstall. How do I get pass this problem?

Solution
With a new board upgrade , you will probably need a clean install , and if it's an OEM license it's tied to the other board. If retail you can install it on your new hardware.
Do you have an OEM or retail copy of win 7? If its OEM, you need a new licence as win 7 matches itself to motherboard its installed on. Retail can be moved from one pc to another but it can only be on one PC at a time

Win 7 wouldn't erase itself if you moved it to another PC, it just may not work correctly unless ytou deleted all the drivers that matched the old motherboard before moving it

Do you have a reason to avoid Win 10 as it is much easier to put it onto a new motherboard than win 7 is. Win 7 doesn't support USB 3 without drivers and many new PC only have 2 USB 2 slots that it would recognise and they normally used for mouse/kb. That makes it hard to install anything else onto them since no USB sticks work.

You need either a new copy of win 7 or 10, and freshj install it on new PC is the sanest approach. Win 7 will take a while to update, win 10 not nearly as long. Win n7 has 314+ updates to get, win 10 has at most 3. Another good reason to use Win 10.

Oh of course

The motherboard I have is the Asus P7P55D-E and Windows 7 bought from bonanza.com the motherboard I plan on getting its the Asrock z97 anniversary.
