Hi,

I have been having a lot of lag and crashes with my pc. Sometimes my games will lag for a moment and then continue. Sometimes they lag so badly I need to reboot the pc to get everything smooth again. I also get delays when typing, but it seems to happen once every hour or so. I also have had the occasional blue screen crash. Sometimes it appears in the event viewer as a stop error and other times nothing shows up. Your help would be much appreciated.

I checked event viewer and I have a few recurring errors and I would like to fix the issue if someone would kindly do so. Obviously I am not sure what is causing

Additional Info;

Swapped out entire RAM (16 gig) with different ram : same errors and issue.

Did a hard drive scan in windows with no errors.

Checked windows files and all seemed fine.

Used CrystalDiskInfo and all ssd reported "good".

I think issue started when I tried to install windows update files and I got my first blue screen - but could be a co-incidence.

As my system is overclocked, I actually ran prime95 a few days ago for 12 hours and all was fine. When I first got the errors, it was the first thing I tested. I already had prime95 installed as well as RealTemp and NvidiaInspector.

Today I ran prime95 for about 45 minutes and no cores reported errors. I think I am safe to say the CPU is not the issue.

I did check inside the case just then and it is very dusty - a lot of the fans are clogged but still running - temps are fine. On idle my CPU is 29 degrees. Sometimes on boot-up my system needs two attempts to get going (after pressing the on button) because the temps are so low. My pc room is air conditioned - (ducted) at 15 degrees. I am quite pedantic about my pc health and have quite a few temp sensors. I also try to keep the pc clean in terms of software and viruses.'

I am a little tired physically at the moment but tomorrow I will clean the PC out with a hand vac.

We don't have any usbs here at the moment but I can buy one at the store this afternoon. How do I boot up the usb once ive downloaded the file to it? I need some simple steps on how to do this and the exact file to download because I looked at the links you guys gave me and there are so many that I got a tad lost. I also have been confused because of the bickering in the post.

I do appreciate the help, but im getting conflicting messages and I just want the pc to be stable.

So far all tests have shown everything is fine, but it isnt.

Just then I have about 100 messages in my event viewer upon boot up.

They all say this

Event id 1060

AppData\Local\Temp\ehdrv.sys has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver.

Event id 7000

The eapihdrv service failed to start due to the following error:
This driver has been blocked from loading

Any ideas?

Lets start with how to run memtest86+. From this page: http://memtest.org/#downiso click on Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) *NEW!* now run the installer and point it to teh proper drive letter. Once installed you will need to enter the BIOS and select the flash drive as the boot device, save and restart. THis program should auto start and run on its own. If it errors it will tell you in red.

Those 2 messages say that a driver is not allowed to run. I will keep looking for what program this is for but does "eapih" ring a bell for a program that you have installed? the DRV after it stands for driver.

Please do not use a hand vac to clean out the PC. it can create static and could potentially hurt the components. Please use compressed air to blow the dust out, if you want you can run a vacuum hose near the opening to help catch the dust just do not touch the components with it. For fan blades I use either a moist face cloth or a moist towelette to wipe the blades. Spinning the fans over there rated RPM's can damage the fan and or cut the life of them down. Most fans can be oiled, machine oil is best like sewing machine oil or even air tool oil if you work with them. ( the sticker on the rear of the fan can be lifted and the center plug can be removed to allow oil to be placed in them, this will keep them alive a lot longer. Do not remove the sticker because this helps keep the plug in place and secured.)

Yes eset, I ran a scan with it previously. I think it complained that I had an antivirus running during the scan. When I disabled the virus scanner and restarted the scan the messages stopped. I found the cause myself when I did a google search shortly after I posted.

My hand vac never enters the actual pc, there is a very long plastic hose with a brush on the end that is quite effective at capturing dust. I think it's specially designed for electrical components, it even has an anti-static band that comes with it, which hooks up to the case. I got it as a gift, it's quite nifty.

You know that here, compressed air spays are like $50, fricken outrageous!

Also, I did a google search on one of the errors and it said it's caused by a corrupted indexing or whatnot. So I am rebuilding the index which apparently solves the issue 99% of the time. It is taking forever however, it has been running for 3 hours and has indexed 260,000 files.

Since I removed avast, I have not had any errors in my event viewer and no lag while typing. The only errors I have had in my event viewer are from indexing and virus scanning errors from eset and malwarebytes.

I also swapped out the ram again and put in the backup ram and will leave it in for a week or so and see how things go. I guess it's easier than using a usb and doing MEM tests - am I right in saying that?

Any other suggestions?

update (I forgot to add) : I did run a sfc /scannow earlier that had no errors - yet just before I ran the indexing it said there were some errors that could not be fixed - yet I didn't even make any changes to the pc in the meantime. How could there be errors only 30 minutes after I ran a scan that said there were no errors? I even did a hard drive scan that said there were no errors.

I am slightly confused.

Would inserting the windows 7 disc and running a repair harm the data on my pc? I really want to avoid a full install. I have so many modded games installed and I really hate spending 2 days installing all the drivers and windows updates. 🙁

swapping out the memory can help find if you have a bad stick of ram but if the settings are off in the BIOS it may not help. THis is where a memory diagnostic tool comes in. It can t=est the memory as it is set and tell you if there are errors. So you are partially correct in your thinking, it can help in some situations. The only sure fire way to know is run Memtest86+ and see if it errors.

It is odd that system file check had errors only 30 mins after the initial run that said there were none. I found this that may help, Try downloading the DISM tool for Win 7 and run it. It works slightly differently than the SFC/Scannow command. http://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how-to-repair-corrupted-windows-system-files-with-the-sfc-and-dism-commands/

Indexing take what seems like forever and is slowed by you using the PC. So for future reference when you need recompile the index it is better to be done overnight when you can set it to run when the system is not being used and you get rest at the same time.

the repair options on the disk are very limited in this way. you can do a start up repair, you can restore the PC to a save point (if you have any). You can try it ( using the disk and see if it can detect anything wrong) and it will not hurt the installation as long as you select the repair option and not the install option.

try it and see if it helps. Just do not select the install option unless you decide to do a full OS installation which will wipe your games and drivers.

Well my restores won't help because I had these errors for nearly a year but only recently have they become troublesome to the point of causing system crashes. They used to just be warnings of catastrophic events....even after critical shutdowns, it still boots up fine.

Any idea how long the index rebuild will take? It has been 5 hours and I haven't been using the pc. I have been watching my TV and only twice have I logged on to this site to post while it's been running.

It says on the websites that you can safely use the pc while indexing is going on, but I have only used this forum for about 2-3 minutes max in the last 5 hours. It has processed 400,000 items so far.

There is no set time it will take to index all the files on the PC. The biggest contributing factor to how long it takes is how many files you actually have. The more files the longer it takes. This is why there is no set time. Like I said if you use the PC it will slow how fast the indexing is. Even when at full speed it still seem like it takes forever. It needs to read the file and then write in the index folder where that particular folder is and that it is there. This takes time and at times seems like it will never stop.

Example: I just indexed my PC, within the past 2 weeks, because trying to search for things just would come up empty but I knew I had them. I have over 900GB worth of game files and around 300GB of odds and ends of personal and OS files, Indexing them took somewhere between 4-6 hours to index 4 drives but 2 are SSD's and 2 are HDD's so I'm sure the SSD's got indexed quicker than the HDD's. Just an example of my recent experience indexing my gaming PC.

EDIT: Oh I wanted to mention that it is very safe to use the PC while indexing (your files will be completely safe) but it will slow the speed of the indexing process. Also if you add any files to the PC in spots that the indexing process has already indexed, they will not be indexed till the next time the index operation is performed.

Oh you can BUT when you search for something on the PC, as in click on the start button and type in something your looking for on the drives some of it will not come up because the index is turned off. OK here is how you turn it off ( although I do not recommend doing so for HDD's ). please read all links before deciding on how you want to proceed: http://superuser.com/questions/73204/correct-way-to-disable-indexing-in-windows-7 and http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/simple-ways-to-increase-your-computers-performace-turn-off-indexing-on-your-local-drives/ and http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/disable-search-indexing-in-windows-7/

hope this helps

The index finally finished rebuilding, it took 10 hours and did about 750,000 items. Since removing avast and also rebuilding the index a lot of the errors have stopped and my pc is running a lot faster. I was surprised at how quick some programs are loading up and most of the lag has gone in my games. I haven't had any blue screens yet, but they occur randomly so I am not so sure if they will still continue happening.

There is still the odd delay when I am typing, such as when typing in this post right now. I will keep an eye on the issue over the next few days and update this post if I need more help.

I hope the issue was just because of an issue with avast.

Just an update... it has been nearly 2 days and I haven't had any event viewer errors and no blue screen crashes.

My games are running amazingly quick. Who would have thought that the indexing could cause such catastrophic issues with the pc.

If something pops up I will update.

Thanks again to the people who helped and to those who sent me private messages trying to give me a heads up on things.

Cheers,

Tony

Well my pc hasn't crashed, but once again I am getting a lot of these errors. I am also getting the occasional lag while typing and in games.

This error has happened with two totally different sets of RAM. So I doubt it's RAM and check disc + sfc /scannow showed no errors.

I also have tried different virus scanners with the same issue.

How do I solve this issue?

THis error is cause by a part of teh windows updater module. please try the Disk to repair this file as it is actually part of the Win 7 OS.

My answers will be short, to the point and of few words for a while as I just had surgery on one of my hands and mean no disrespect by it.

Have you run all the hardware tests to eliminate the hardware from being an issue?

I have replaced ALL THE RAM, so it can't be ram as the ram I have in my system is brand new right out of the box. (spare ram).

I ran prime95 for 24 hours and on my water cooled system I had no errors with any of the cores. I ran chkdsk with no errors and I ran sfc /scannow with no errors, even though on occasion it says there is an error and sometimes it says there isn't - quite odd.

I haven't had any BSOD for nearly a week, but I do get occasional lag in typing and in games. I have run eset, malwarebytes and other one time scanners and no viruses found.

My system is up to date with all important drivers, including bios.

I have quite a concern about this error because I am about to purchase a new video card and I don't want to waste my money if the pc is going to die at any moment or if it doesn't im running at lower performance.

I also used pcpitstop and uginhaven and my pc performance is rated top 4% for it's build and my windows rating is 7.8. So it seems to be running fine on benchmarks.

I would prefer not to re-install windows as it's just a pain with all the drivers I have and the amount of "tweaking" I have done to get my browser and games running fine. By tweaking I don't mean messing with registry or anything like that, I mean just getting adblockers, drivers for watching videos and lots of programs to monitor my pc health.

Your help on fixing this would be appreciated.

Cheers and I hope your hand recovers,

Tony.

I tried to run the Windows Update Readiness Tool, but I can't tell if it worked. It is meant to take about 15 minutes to run, but it ran for less than a minute.

I checked eventviewer and I have this error, not sure if it's related.

The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for FailureCommand with the following error:
Access is denied.

I guess we narrowed the error being windows update but now I want to fix it. It makes sense that the error is windows update as I remember that my power outage actually happened during a windows update...

I am closer to solving this issue and I think I have narrowed it down to a driver issue, but I need someones help.

I finally ran "driver verifier.exe" from windows and it is meant to give a BSOD if there is a virus or driver issue and I got lots of BSOD. It said "verifier found a driver trying to cause critical damage to the windows system" something like that....so I know now its a driver issue, and I have the minidump but I have no idea how to read it...

Your help would be much appreciated.

Okay I have the exact code.

0xC4: DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION

How do I find what driver is causing my issues? Could it be a virus or something amiss?

Maybe I should re-install windows and be done with it?

I also traced back to where I got the first BSOD and the actual update that failed.

The update is KB2952664...

How can I re-download this update?

Update: I checked this windows update and it actually installed once in April, then it failed a month later and then it installed again a few days ago.

Can a single update with the same name install more than once or do they all have different names.

I have uninstalled the mouse driver, it seemed I had 2 drivers for 1 mouse. I did get a new mouse and it was the same brand, but a new model and maybe I had conflicting drivers.

Verifier no longer gives me BSOD.

Now the orginal ESET 399 error with a corrupted bit - could that be caused by my mouse?

Cheers.
