This is definitely a step in the WRONG direction. I guess the question is how annoying will these adds be, and will the average point and click user realize what they're agreeing to when they install "that cool theme".
Seems like one more thing i'll have to get into the habbit of removing from people's computers when they complain that "it's to slow to do anything"...

"These are great examples of Microsoft innovation and technology coming together to enable top global brands to reach audiences in new and interesting ways."

Blaaa, haaaa, haaaa LOL. This is a trial, next step you MS users will have this shit forced onto your desktop if MS thinks they can get away with it.

Linux for me baby, adverts, we don't need no stinking adverts, Ubuntu, Debian, Mandriva, Suse are all good. I use Ubuntu right now.

I can see this, you can buy the cheap advert infested version cheap or pay through the nose for a advertisement free OS, Blaaa haaaa haaa LOL.

"The new Windows Theme Experience and Windows Personalization Gallery in Windows 7 allow consumers to customize their technology to reflect the things in life they are most passionate about."

This is a big long euphemism for "We've found another way to jam our product advertising down your throat, in addition to the myriad of other surfaces we've ruined".

Eff that shit man.

What is this world going to look like in another 10 or 20 years? I'm almost scared to imagine the corporate infiltration.

Banksy says it best:

"...They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you're not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It's yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don't owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don't even start asking for theirs."

I suppose I should mention that although my post was "Frothing at the mouth", I understand that these theme ideas are entirely voluntary.

It's just the idea of these titanic corporations handjobbing each other.

At some point in time, the inevitable will happen, and that inevitable is some company with a big enough bankroll to diarrhea their products into your face, from some new medium/surface which you did not choose.

[citation][nom]winterlord[/nom]well once everyone buys it and they rake in there profit maybe they will just give it free toeveryone and instead of having a uac it will be an add pop up yes or no choice... wtf[/citation]

Thankfully, Apple, was just issued the patent on the use of manditory add technology enforced by hardware and OS code, and they've had a real good track record of patenting such anti-consumer technologies in the past for the express purpose of ensuring noone else can do so (including them) ensuring you should not see any kind of adds on your PC or mobile device that can not be in some way removed or blocked. :)

My initial thought was, that SUKS!, but they are user down loadable themes. You pick and install it if you like. I have already installed the Porsche and Ferrari themes and they are pretty cool and slick. I have no problem with that.

I am probably alone in this but I would not mind a free edition of Windows 7 even it it was say something like Mountain Dew branded and you could not change the theme for say something like 1 year. yeah that would be kinda cool lol

Of course there would be almost instantly hacks to get what ever theme you wanted on your machine but, 99% of the people who would take up that kind of offer would not bother.

Now for something on topic. You can already download Coke theme's from the Windows theme site unless they mean directly from Windows Update in the optional updates? I don't really care for most of the theme's they have though.... Avatar looks weird lol

ha ha ha ha ha ha -- oh this is really funny -- geee Windows Live Messenger does that right now and there is NO way to turn off the ads it displays. And you should see where some of the ads are sourced from -- do an IP trace, talk about a HUGE f'in security risk. Now Microsoft is gonna let one's desktop be yet another source of advertisements -- yeah I can see Microsoft are really committed to security. What a f'in joke of an OS.

I can see it now, some cheap grass humper who wants his OS for free is in the middle of playing Crysis 3 (4 or whatever twitcher game) and then gets slammed back to the desktop so that XYZ ad can play in full screen -- oh this is really some funny stuff.

A slow way for M$oft to put adverts into the OS. If that's the case make Win7 free with adverts. No problems there. But if someone has to pay and look at adverts then we have problems.

The Apple patent is way different and goes like this: "A new patent application filed by Apple in the United States has revealed that technology giant is in the middle of copyrighting software technology which will force consumers to watch or listen to adverts on their products.

Described in the application as “enforcement routine” software, consumers will be unable to skip the adverts and may even be asked questions by the device to ensure that the user has fully understood the advert properly. Those listening to adverts on their iPods, for instance, may be asked to press a series of button combinations to tell the device that they have been paying attention during the advert."

If I were quizzed on content then I would never get to use the technology. What will they do for those who are memory challenged or have Alzheimer's? Any type of ads suck. I will pay just not to have it, but then maybe that is the idea. But wait, I did pay for my Win7.

What about public access computers. Will public institutions get a kick-back for posting such ads on their public machines? Libraries, schools, etc.? It would be a good way to put technology into the schools, but that is about the only redeeming value.

[citation][nom]pocketdrummer[/nom]I'll never obtain a copy of Windows legally again if they put ads on my desktop without my consent, or if more apps have ads due to this than those that do not...[/citation]
Unless they give it to you for free... Then, you can't not have it legally.

it will probably be the first thing I will disable!
Ads or no ads,I want a plain background without any eyecandy.
Ofcourse, ads in an OS are to be banned to hell!

Allow clothing designers and retailers to advertise their mall-enclosed chain stores and perfectly ordinary low-quality products by adding logos to their clothing ... but eschew desktop advertising. Hm. I guess some people are only happy when they are paying for the experience of personally being an advertising mule.

This is interesting twist, I thought Apple's patent for an ad-based OS was a move against Google. But with Microsoft suggesting an ad-based Office and now an ad-based OS.... ?

Themes and IE8 add-ons are optional. They can be added and removed easily Read the whole article before posting. Some of the posts seem like they were writen by people that don't understand computers or windows. The default homepage of Safari is www.apple.com..... seems like advertising to me. This can also be easily changed.

A misleading title..... maybe. Seems like a whole bunch of lemmings just ran off the edge of the cliff.

Corporate greed at it's finest... Officially proud, but still unsatisfied with the ~90% o$ market share, m$ seeks new innovative ways to increase profits.
For those happy that it's (still) not compulsory, don't be too optimistic, wintarded micro$uxx fankiddies would gladly adopt any $hit from m$, it's just taking some time to be properly trained.
A small $tep for m$, a giant leap for ads, and associated dumbness.
