Windows 7 doesn't detect my external cd drive

Months back I took out the cd drive from my old system unit that ran on windows XP. I connected it to my notebook using the SATA to USB adaptor and it doesn't detect it at all! I've tried everything. It doesn't show up amywhere, device manager, disk management....yet nothing! When I first linked it up to my notebook..it said that the device driver wasn't installed successfully. The only place where it got detected was in the devices and printers tab as USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge under the specified section. But then it dissapears after 5-6 seconds. The bridge works very well as I caused no problems at all when I connected the cd drive to my mom's windows xp laptop (it already has a cd drive in it) or when I used to connect hard drives. Since notebooks have no cd drives I can't put in the installation disk. I've copied the driver files via USB yet it doesn't work when I run the setup as it says that windows can't find the supported hardware in the system. What should I do? I've tried everything on the net but nothing. Im so frustrated to the brink of depression.

Internal drives traditionally require a sata to be connected to the motherboard for data reading and burning, but also power molex cable from the psu to be connected to run the drives, your notebook is not supply enough power, much like how previously some external hard drives required to usb connectors to plugged to work on some units. I recommend you get external case for cd drive to convert it into an external cd/dvd drive as sold in electronics shops or online sites.

Actually the sata to usb cable I bought has 2 cables. One connects the drive's power port to an electric socket. I can operate the drive once I plug in the power cable so power isn't the problem here tho

Check in device manager if there are any yellow exclamation marks, if there is let windows go online for a driver, or try powering off and clean the usb port. I had a issue with usb pendrives not being recognized until cleaning the usb port.

It worked perfectly when I used it to connect a hard drive to the same elitebook. Oh and the cd drive was from a Windows XP computer. It worked perfectly well when I connected it to another windows xp laptop. I dont think its the USB port tho. All of them work fine with pendrives and etc
