I'm having two problem with my PC, which could be related. unfortunately, i'm not very tech-savvy, and what i've found online so far has not been very helpful.

problem one is the biggest. after about 8-10 minutes of being idle, my PC freezes and then gets a blue screen. there are no noticable problems while it's active.

problem two is that i seem to be missing about 20 gigs from my C: drive. it is partitioned to have 49 gigs of space, which is now about full, but so far as i can trace it by checking the properties of all the folders (incuding the normally hidden ones) i only seem to have about 25 gigs filled.

so far i've only checked my C drive using the windows error checker tool, but that did not work. it started the error-checking process but stayed at 0 files checked for about 20 minutes before i reset.

WOW Ancient box your trying to make into a modern PC is my first glaring thought.

First your running on 2GB memory, that was XP, not Vista/7, and you need at least 4 (care minumum) most assuredly 8 woul dbe best. That will cause alot of problems to begin with, which leads to problem 2.

Second as you don't have enough memory it 'borrows' from your Hard Drive 'Virtual memory' by reserving enough space to always be able to accomplish tasks, but it doesn't mean it is using that space, just reserves it. As your drives are 'Full' your causing Windows to crash period just by being full, nevermind it 'freaks out' (BSOD) because it can't run correctly set aside the virtual memory it constantly fights with itself to use.

Third - a Pentium 3! OH COME ON! The parts aren't even found buried in landfills anymore at how old this is.

My recommendation, go to Walmart, grab the simple i3Core laptop for $249 and call it a done deal. Tons of memory, hard drive space, clean start and cheap. There is no cheaper solution (just buying a larger hard drive alone is at least $99) to resolve ALL the issues your making here
