Windows 7 install hangs on "starting windows" screen

Hi all.

When I run the Windows 7 Home Premium OEM disc I get past "loading files" and then freeze on "starting windows". I see 4 little colored balls in the center of the screen (guessing the start of the MSFT logo) and then everything freezes.

Here's what I've got:

Monitor: Samsung T260HD 25.5in Rose/Black LCD w/ATSC

HDD: 2 x Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G

Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3 1600MHz (3x2)

DVD: LG 22X DVDRW SATA

Motherboard: ASUS P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB

Power Supply: Corsair 950w 80 Plus Power Supply

GPU: 5850 is backordered, so am using an old Nvidia 6600 GT to attempt to install Windows - connected to monitor with DVI cable

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium OEM

I've done lots of research and tried:

1. Using a PS2 keyboard/mouse
2. Disabling USB in bios
3. Disabling just about everything else in bios
4. Tried w/ 2MB, 4MB and 6MB ram

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi i would just like to comment that i have just had 2 computer in for a service in my workshop.
And i can confirm that both machines had this problem until i replaced the 950w corsair psu.
After this i have had no problems at all.

hi having the same problem have the 950 psu too and have been having the same problems described above gues u have to reorder a psu and see what happends have almost identical hardware setup and as someone mentioned it has to be saome problems betwen the psu and the motherboard

I having exactly the same problem as you had.
I trying to install windows 7 without succes.
I bought the OEM version family prenium but freeze at the beginning of the installation.

My new configuration ( everything is new)

Motherboard: Asus P6T deluxe V2 ( LGA 1366)
Processor: Intel Core i7 950 ( LGA 1366)
Ram : 6 X 2 Go DDR3 Corsair XMS ( TR3X6G1333C7 G)
1rst HDD: SSD 128 Go
2nd HDD:WD Caviar Black 1To
GPU: Ati 5850 1 Go
Windows 7 Prenium 64 bits (OEM)
Power supply: Corsair TX950 W

I tried many things like Stentorian:

Using a PS2 keyboard/mouse, disabling USB in bios, disabling just about everything else in the bios, tried to change the Ram, tested with another Win7DVD, I've tried with AHCI and IDE mode, I've tried to install win XP without success.

Someone in another forum gave me this link . It's interresting because I have exactly the same power supply and motherboard.
Unfortunately , I don't have an another PSU to make the test.
This problem has been recognized by Corsair or Asus ?
I don't want to by the HX1000W if this doesn't work.

I am having a similar problem (windows install hangs at first startup just like others); however, I do NOT have the Corsair PSU. I am using an Antec NeoPower HE550w (ATX 12v 2.2)

I have an older machine I can use for parts with a 400w PSU (ATX 12v ver. 2.03), do you think it would be wise to try an older and less good PSU like this one? Is the issue only the installation (and first startup)? In other words, could I use the lower powered PSU for install and then swap back to my newer 550w PSU?

My setup:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad (Q9650) 3Ghz/1333Mhz/12MB
MBoard: Asus P5K-E
GPU: Sapphire HD 2600XT

Aha! Eureka! Problem solved. For me I had to change the SATA configuration in the BIOS to "compatible." I had thought I did that but I guess I had not.

Simple fix for a seemingly impossible issue. Now it starts up without a hitch on first installation!

It is possible to know what model of Power Supply did you use to replaced them.
I would like to replace mine and I want to be sure that the new one will be compatible with my motherboard.

Same issue on my very first build!!!

I'm using all the components of the December 2009 $1,300 build. All purchased from newegg. The only thing I changed was getting a nicer case (same brand, size, etc)

I've made it to various stages of the Win7 OEM installation.
1. First try froze on second load screen
2. Second froze as 4 colored bubbles appeared.
3. Made it past second load screen and was sent back to BIOS
4. Made it past second load screen and then...IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD

Here's what i've replaced. I retried after each component was replaced:

1. Hard Drive
2. CD Drive (it was an old crappy one, only played cd's)
3. PSU - I got the 1000HX as suggested above
4. MOB - just replaced it today

Still the same issue. After replacing the MOB today the load went a little further and I had a mouse pointer with control....then...after waiting a couple of minutes it sent me back to BIOS?

Any thoughts guys, cause I'm new and stumped??

Today, I bought a new PSU ( The Corsair HX1000W) and now, I can confirm to you that my problem was a hardware incompatibility with the TX950W PSU and the Asus P6t deluxe V2 motherboard.
Windows was installed without any problem.

It will hang. Go to sleep and when you wake up it will have continued. That's the way it works.

Same problem as above (WIN7 hangs)......weird part is that upon being able enter safe mode a "system restore" worked just fine.
I then ran a check disk and a full virus scan in win7 without a hitch.

Upon the machine going into sleep mode overnight I awoke to a blank screen/unresponsive screen and had to power off completely to enter a reboot .................which returned me to the same win7 hang problem.

Thx for the post! I have a Corsair tx850 w/ Gigabyte a x58 board and had the same hanging problem. Swapped out the 850 with my Thermaltake 750 and worked like a charm.

Hi there, Sorry for bringing up an old topic, but...

I am having a few issues with my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop.

Specs
- Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5850 (2.16GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB Cache)
- 3GB of Dual Channel 667MHz DDR2 memory
- 250GB SATA hard drive
- Jet Black with webcam and microphone

-I insert the cd and installation starts fine, I get to the part where it copies the files and expands the files. Now the copying is done in less than a second, then it starts the expanding process, it sits on 0% for 10-15 miniutes then comes up with a dialogue box saying:

Cannot read files, files are damaged or corrupt. (With an error CODE)

-Its not the cd either because I installed it on another PC and everything went smooth as.

*Installing Windows 7
-Installation runs fine, gets to completing installation, restarts and starts to load windows, the windows logo appears and is waving around as it does then my webcam light flashes and the logo stops moving and freezes on that screen. I have left it over night to see if it will continue but never does.
When I first got the laptop, I updated to Windows 7 and had it running for quite some time, then it froze and wouldn't start again so tried re-installing it but it never wants too now.

*Windows XP Professional Sp2
-Installs fine, boots up fine, can do everything on it. But as soon as I install the Sigimatel Audio drivers for it and reboot it just black screens before it loads windows.
I then have to reboot in safe mode and disable the sound driver and then reboot, and it starts fine but with no sound.


So if anyone knows of anything I can do I would be much appreciated

I had the same problem.

Case – Moneual Labs 972, MB – Asus P7P55D-E Pro, PSU – Enermax EES620AWT, CPU – I5 750 2.66, RAM – 4GB (2x2) GSkill GSK F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ, GPU – MSI 5450, W7 Ultimate 64bit


Problem#1
I put the computer into sleep from the power button on the case, killed my TV/Monitor assuming things would go as usual, went to bed. Next day, turned on my TV and noticed HTPC’s power was still on, with both the case and TV screen displaying only a black screen, and the HDD indicator on case was pegged (accessing/thinking). Couldn’t get W7 to come back and only option was to hold power button for 5 sec to turn off. Then nothing worked at all, like it was fried. Opened case and the only signs of life I could get was a green led on the MB and one on the back of the touch screen. Jumped the PSU and it worked so that was ruled out.

Fix #1
Reset CMOS. Refer to the MB manual for instructions. Just moving the jumper didn’t work for me, so I had to remove the battery too. Computer fired up first time after resetting, but…


Problem #2
…when starting W7, computer freezes on the Windows logo pulsating splash screen. The 4 colored orbs fly into place and pulse for about 5 seconds, then freeze and no longer pulse. I tried just about everything under the sun in BIOS settings, startup options, PS/2 keyboard w/ no mouse, etc. I could get W7 to load but only in safe mode, however the same problem always occurred when trying a ‘normal’ boot. Also tried booting/reinstalling from W7 disc with same problem.

Fix #2
Powered off computer. Removed 2nd RAM chip from MB. Started computer and worked first time. Then powered off computer and reinserted RAM. W7 loads, works as it should, and all 4GB RAM show in BIOS.

I'm having hanging problems all over the place.

I am just barely getting into the world of building your own comp, and I must say, it's proving more migraine than anything...

I've successfully installed OEM Windows XP on two computers and a laptop in the past, but with my current "built" one its hanging either at the 100% setup finished bar, or at 14% installing the gm.dlls driver (May be typo, but its around there) I got fed up so I borrowed my friend's copy of windows 7 (64 bit) which he had successfully installed before hand. It finishes EVERYTHING and restarts, but then it hangs at "completing installation" after the restart. I've let it sit for half an hour, and the dots aren't moving anymore so I try to manually resets which leads me to a pop up that says I can try to repair (doesn't work - i tried repair and it only comes up that i have to remove any excessive usb or attached things which i dont have) or reinstall. I've already attempted several times with both under different settings, and still to no avail...

I have:
-Antec Basiq BP500U 500W Continuous Power ATX12V Version 2.01 Active PFC Power Supply
-GIGABYTE GA-770T-USB3 AM3 AMD 770 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
-EVGA 01G-P3-1228-LR GeForce GT 220 FTW 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
-AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2GHz Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Desktop Processor - C3 Revision HDZ555WFGMBOX
-Western digital 500gb HDD
-Corsair DDR3 RAM (4 gigs)
-ASUS CD/DVD Drive
-Old case (Don't know, it was given by a friend)
-HDD recognizes as MASTER and asus dvd drive recognizes as SLAVE in BIOS (both SATA and AHCI settings)


So far my attempts (not in any particular order) have been (this is trying with BOTH windows on same settings, once or multiple times)
-Original Bios Setups (Win 7 freezes at expanding files at 3x%, windows xp freezes at 14%)
-Turning off Floppy in bios (Win 7 gets to complete installation, freezes adn doesn't restart, windows xp still freezes around 14%)
-Taking out one stick of ram(win7 and xp seem to load up much much muuuch faster, but still hanging at above named positions)
-Changing bios from Sata to AHCI, win7 restarts after install, but freezes at completes install AFTER successful reboot, windows xp no change
-returning BOTH the mobo and cpu, still problems persist
-Taking out the USB connections to mouse/keyboard substituting with PS/2 connections, no change.
-Disable sound in bios, no change.


There were tons of tweaks to bios and other changes (these are the ones i can think of off the top of my head), but still nothing. so far windows 7 seemed to be mroe favorable as it got to the complete installation after successful reboot, but nothign after and repairing doesn't seem to work. Tomorrow or the day after will replace the power supply for a 650W and hoping this COULD POSSIBLY be the problem...

Had the same issue as u guys with windows 7 hanging on boot. My i7 build is days old and was perfect got it to boot in one shot after about 5 hrs of careful building. I cant say as to what caused the issue and i combed the forums for a solution which none worked. I just rebooted after after using the pc for days and place some new cables in to find it not booting. I formatted and it hanged, safe mode the usual.I was pulling my hair out trying to figure it out.
My solution came when I replaced my primary HDD and formatted the new drive, I then connected the old drive and formatted it by right clicking both partions that appeared???I ran windows disc and deleted the extra partion and through Disc manager formatted the volume as one disc and proceeded to run win 7 on the faulty disc. Guess what I am writing this comment from the same HDD which was giving trouble with a fresh install of 7.

I had the exact some problem but with a totally different setup.
After reading about the PSU and driver issues causing this issue I unplugged my 3x 1TB seagate drives.
Next boot ran perfectly!! it stayed on the blue screen for quite a while but I knew that was normal.
