Hi all,

trying to help a friend fix their computer. their windows wont load...

the laptop is an acer aspire 7741-6445

model no: ms2309

my friend lost their installation cd. (we think)

ive tried using the rocovery partition and it fails saying failed to load the image or something.

ive tried download windows 7 from microsoft and entered my cd key and it said unable to supply with windows 7 iso because my windows came pre installed (i think thats what it said)

i tried download windows 7 iso from cnet or something and had it installed like 60% expanding files then it said i dont have all the required files..

i really dont want to pay the 19.99 for the acer recovery cd

is that my only option or what? does anyone have a windows 7 home premium iso?

64 bit or 32 bit would work.. umm digital river doesnt seem to work either

thanks in advance

Sorry, but no. That's an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) version. Whoever built the system (Acer in your case) is the OEM and your only support for Windows is through them.

I'm aware of that, it's a better method for when he gets one.The majority of people on this forum never mention this tool. Win 7 disks and ISO are easy to get Ebay $25, walk across the street and ask a neighbor and so on be resourceful it's not hard to find Win 7 copies even easier to find Legit Keys.

Tom's Hardware does not support software piracy in any form. Any of your "legit" keys are not legit unless they are from reputable, authorized, third party resellers and they're not "cheap" Since this is an Acer OEM version of Windows, the cheapest and only legitimate way to gain a valid OS is to purchase the recovery CD from Acer.

As I said, Tom's Hardware does not support software piracy in any form. Sorry that you hate us, but this is our stance. If Windows Vista was the original OS for your computer and the Acer recovery disk has Windows Vista on it then yes. You should be able to install Vista onto your system.

Microsoft used to. They've changed their system so that only if you purchased a Retail version can you get a replacement ISO from them. We, as moderators, have found that legitimate OEM ISOs will not validate under Microsoft's new ISO Download policies. Of course, they are perfectly within their rights as any OEM version of Windows is only supported by those who installed the OEM version (in your case, ACER).

In theory, a legitimate Windows 7 ISO matching the version of Windows initially installed on your friend's laptop, with a valid Windows 7 Product Key (listed on the sticker attached at the bottom of your friend's laptop) *should* work.

yes pirating would be more like telling someone to go download a ISO of windows 7 that includes a CD key. this is not what we are doing. the laptop has a CD key all we are telling them is to see if they can get a copy of windows 7 to see if the CD keys works. they didn't mention if the laptop originally came with windows 7 and if it didn't then they could very well be trying to pirate it but we are just going by the info provided
