I don't know why people are making a big deal about the starter edition. Yes being tech savy people it seems hard to see how someone can just use 3 applications. The whole idea behind the netbook market is its a BASIC machine. I usually have only 2 apps open at a time, but I am constantly opeing and closing other apps. I find it funny people complaning about it on here talking about how many apps they have open. YOU GUYS AND GALS are TECHIES...You are not the average end user. The netbook is not supposed to replace a laptop. The whole idea behind the netbook is to have a inexpesnive laptop type computer for people who want something simple thats not as expesive as a laptop. Its also for people who travel and want to check email and maybe browse the web.
It just seems like everyone wants it to be more than a basic machine.

To me its like comparing a Toyota Corolla to a Yukon XL. You cannot pay for a corolla and expect it to do the same things a Yukon XL does. Thats like saying well why can't I get 4 x 4 in a corolla. You pay for what you need. If you need more room, 4 wheel drive, than you buy a Yukon not a corolla.
That said if you need a machine that can play games, run multiple apps, watch movies, edit pics or video's etc than buy a laptop. If you need something simple that you can surf the net, check you mail and maybe play solitare than a netbook is what you want.

Having a netbook (HP 1030NR, 1GB Ram, 16GB SSD) I am currently running Win 7 RC1 Ultimate and have found that it runs well on it. I get a faster speed than WInXP home SP3, and about the same as having the hp version of linux on it. SO if a person wants the low cost they can do the starter edition. I have no plans to try and run Photoshop or any other heavy duty program on it. That being said, Office 2007 pro runs very nice on it.

3 apps it's good for a netbook, my MSI U100 runs great but u cant do much more than take notes with office, while chatting with MSN and maybe listening to music if ur not in a class. That's where i get my notes from... so yeah most of the time im running 2-3 apps.
And to increase my netbook boot speed, and memory usage i killed all the other aplications such as sound manager, and others, only Antivirus left.
I think it would be "Ok" for a netbook used as it should be, if ur trying to get a notebook from a netbook well... ur problems will be greater.
or you could try getting another version of 7
