dtemple:

Your statements are faulty a 386DX wont be able to run windows 7 not because it lacks a co-cpu but because it lacks the instructions needed and because 33Mhz (or 40Mhz if you can find one) just wont cut it (seriously the PCI bus runs on 33Mhz).

If you would like some SIMM's that could bring you up to the needed 96megs (maximum of 128megs) you would find little to no problem since there are many websites still offering them.

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/30PS16MB/
or
http://www.memoryx.net/16mbx96.html

However running on a Pentium or 486DX-4 might work (depending on what you call running that is).
The reason that it might work is because i dont know what instruction sets are needed and if its only needs a 32-bit x86 (extended i386) cpu it might install and boot after some minor tweaking (depends on the definition of minor though).
However such a machine will never be use-able and could be compared with a machine oc'd to 7Ghz, it really is for play and show getting the maximum out of it or in this case getting the minimum to run.

I've done this with vista and windows7 using a pentium II 266, All you have to do is install windows7 with a p3 1000 then after install drop in the p2 266, pretty simple, I can't believe he is called a hacker and gets any credibility for it

installed win7 on an athlon xp 2000 with 768MB of ram, it worked so well, even allowing a geforce4 Ti4200 to be installed by using old drivers from nvidia.
probably as fast as win xp with the good looks, added functionality, and seemingly better security. (since xp is used by more people)

[citation][nom]chripuck[/nom]???? Are you referring to Windows 7? You know it's still in the RC stage... Why would you expect it to be perfect yet?At least hold your complaints until October.[/citation]
Does anybody EVER expect Windows to be perfect (or any OS for that matter)? Oh,a dn FYI, RC = Release Candidate, which means they could release it as it is.

He must've installed windows from a newer system, and then moved the drive? the installer doesn't work with 256mb or less as far as I know. Think I'll see if I can find a really old computer with enough memory to do the same :) Too bad 64mb isn't enough. I do have a 486 with that, but can't upgrade it futher.

Bah! can't find anything suitable! my stock of old junk skips anything I could use. The 486 is with fastpage, and the next up system is a lifebook 351 with 64mb (p2 like the one used). Next best thing I have actually meets the requirements.

Guys, I did it! I installed Win 7 onto a 486. And yes, it does indeed run Crysis. I don't have any screen shots, so you just have to take my word for it.

Interesting, but must have been slow:)
I installed Windows Vista on a K6-2, 500Mhz with 256MB RAM, the boot took about 5 minutes, took hours to install, but until Vista worked more or less, of course, after I installed off a lot of services.

Anyone here might say "hey I'm not surprised", "it is nothing at all" or "Why he is called a hacker". But you missed one important point: he took the time and thoughts to do it, so I guess he deserves its +1.

The user that said "Let's put Win98/95 on Core i7" might want to reconsider and push it to farther envelope...like Windows 3.1 on Core i7 I guess ??

@ "Will it run Crysis" comments

>> Guys that's a classic one, but let's try something you have not thought before.

Will it blend? :)

Yes it can run Crysis, in DOS mode 320x240 pixels, DX5, with all settings set to below the lowest setting!

Lmfao, it's pointless, cause it's probably really slow to use, but still very cool that he could do it.

Would be most grateful if Tom's could stop spamming about Windows 7. Never seen such an intensive campaign before. Every 2-4 article is about Windows 7. I'm starting to get really annoyed about it. I wonder how much Micrsoft have paid Tom's for this.

Actually, the limiting factor on a low spec PC isn't the CPU, but the bios.
Without suitable ACPI support, Windows 7 will not boot.
A 486 is out, and so are many Pentium systems.
I have tested quite a few from my museum.
I do have a PII 233 in a Tekram P6B40-A4X running, but not with useable performance. Windows 7 agrees :- "The Windows Experience Index could not be computed"

I'll have to try Win7 on my ancient K6-III rig
I've got windows 98 SE on that right now and wasn't planning on putting anything higher as it's quite nippy, but considering the differences between XP and Vista to Windows 7 i might just do this :)

I got it to run really fast on a p3. The trick is to use 1024x768 resolution @ 16bit color, disable aero, set computer properties visual effects to best performance, desktop theme to Windows Classic, no sounds, disable UAC / indexing service / iis / iishc / gadgets, limit startup apps in msconfig, set groups to none and make all folders like this, set always show icons never thumbnails, and disable automatic updates. I could probably get it to run nice on a p2 as well but I don't have one. The precious motherboard of that p3 has the serial and parallel ports needed along with ISA slot cards to communicate with our satellite equipment that controls satellites that are still in orbit and needed a way to run IE9 for apps we are developing for them.
