Ok, so I need to decide what type of windows 7 I should get, but I'm still not sure how the system builders version works. I am planning on building a new computer anyway, so it sort of seems like that would be the better way to go because it's quite a bit cheaper. I've also heard that Microsoft doesn't provide support for the system builders version, but what exactly does that mean? Does that mean that if they send me a bad copy or something, that's just tough luck for me? Also, if my motherboard dies, can I still reinstall windows? Thanks

Solution
It's an OEM version, meaning that it can only be installed to one system. If you had to replace the motherboard at some point, you would probably have to call MS and see if they'll allow for it to be installed again, as an OEM version locks itself to a particular motherboard. They do provide support, i.e. updates and such.

If you call Microsoft and tell them you replaced the motherboard and/or CPU, they will not reactivate your license. If you call them and tell them your system requested activation and absolutely nothing has changed... they will give you an activation code.

OEM copy means you can't call MS and ask questions. The product still has full warranty.

The retail version you can take from your original build to a totally different build. If your MoBo craps out, you do get to install it on the "replacement" MoBo. You can upgrade your system but incrementally....changing 6 or more things that it checks will trigger an activation problem. A Yahoo search on Windows Activation should give you a list of the things it checks.
