Hi! I'm in a bit of trouble. I have a laptop that has a HDD drive. I removed the drive and made a backup. After that i did a clean install of windows 10 on a new SSD, again that worked, but here's the issue. I connected the old hdd with a usb adapter. For some reason windows won't detect the external drive in explorer. I can see it in diskpart but after that I'm stuck. If i plug in the old drive i can still boot to windows. I'm in quite a panic to get this working as i use Farm management software for moving herds.

You've installed a new OS on an internal drive.
What do you need the old Win 7 drive for?

I have a usb drive plugged in at the moment. I'm copying the files to that but I would really prefer to use the actual hdd.
I understand.

But sometimes, just getting it done trumps "i prefer".

Especially if this is the only copy of this data.

Get it off to this USB drive first.
Then maybe play with and diagnose the HDD issue. It may be an issue with the external adapter, and incompatible sector sizes.
