What would happen if I were to do the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and my computer died after the free upgrade period has expired.

Would I be able to use my Windows 7 key to register Windows 10 or would it not work?

Solution

yeah, this is becasue of the licence key, you will have a license key for windows 7 not 10.
you might have the windows 10 install disk(which any one can get) but you wont have the license
well that is the problem, if your computer dies after the free upgrade, then you will be stuck with windows 7. unless you built it your self and has a retail version of windows 7 on it, then you might be able to transfer it to another computer. but if you replace the drive the windows is on after the date(i think july 29 2016) then you will have to reinstall windows 7.

So what you're saying is that my windows 7 key will NOT be able to activate a copy of windows 10 after the period expires? Even if I have a windows 10 install disk?

Thanks for the help, I'm still deciding on whether or not to do the update if this is the case...
