Howdy, I need some help answering a question that, despite continuous searches, I haven't been able to find much useful information.

What I am planning to do is transfer my current hard drive to a new build I'm working on, with my current version of Windows as well, so I don't have to purchase a new version and install everything on my current HDD again. I have read up about the system preparation tool and I plan to use it, but what I am currently worried about is that the tutorials I have read say you can't use an OEM license version, or an in-place upgrade from windows vista.

My version of windows was installed from a vista upgrade disc, using that trick that I can't seem to find any info on, but it wasn't actually upgraded from vista, it was a new installation onto new hardware.

I want to know if using said trick qualifies as an upgrade/repair installation, (or an OEM version, but as far as I can tell it isn't,) therefore I cannot use the prep tool and I will have to purchase a new license for my new computer.

And please tell me if I have made any mistakes in my post, I am still rather new to this forum.

Links to where I read up on said issues and the system prep tool:

Nope. Probably not going to work.
And disregard Sysprep. That is NOT designed for what you want to do.

A Win 7, upgraded from an old Vista install....is almost certainly an OEM license.
And even if it isn't, that Win 7 is not a standalone install license.

The above just covers the licensing aspect.

Operation, actually booting up....probably not. A new motherboard and system most often chokes the old OS install. SO a full reinstall is needed.
And then a new license is needed.

Bottom line - You need to purchase a new OS for your new PC.

Is there nothing I can do, at all?
And if it's entirely not an option, can you recommend somewhere I can purchase a retail version of 7?
