Windows 7 upgrade

Hi I am building a new pc. I have Windows 7 upgrade downloaded for free from school website. Is there a way to fresh install this even though it is windows 7 UPGRADE? I read online about regedit way, but I want a legel way like the double install method. Can I use a key from my old laptop or something? I have an old dell, do you think i can take out the hard drive and use it? can i install on my ssd or will it only install on the old dell drive? Is there a way i can just get the key or something from the old drive and update that way? is there any way for this to work legally or am i screwed?

You will have to have a retail copy of an older OS (XP and up) or an activated OEM copy already installed on the machine in question for the upgrade to work

In order for an upgrade version to be legal you need to be upgrading from a previous version not installing it on a new PC. What you will have to do is buy a full oem version ~$100 or Full retail version for ~$300.

does a version of windows on a laptop count as a retail version???

If it shipped with the laptop then its most likely OEM not retail and tied to the laptop.

YES, You just need a OS installed first. (It does not need to be activated), install the upgrade on top of that & then activate the upgrade, after it is installed.
