Windows 7 x64 upgrade vs full

I have Vista 32 bit now, but want to go to Windows 7 64 bit. I can't quite figure out what qualifies for the upgrade price, rather than the full version, $90 more.

Since it's not an in-place upgrade, will I have to buy the full version of Windows 7?

The upgrade version will suit you fine, as long as it detects a version of vista when you boot from the DVD i.e. dont reformat before you try to install.

StaggaDee is right, however you won't be able to do an in-place upgrade from Vista to 7 due to the architecture difference between 32 and 64 bit.
